Best Memories?
Ok - we all have had them..some great...some funny...and some not so funny! Just thought it would be nice to share some of our memories and maybe a few of our cooking tricks to salvage dinner! You know..like the time the kitchen sink backed up...the turkey looked more like a poached chicken...the relatives that came to dinner that you haven't seen in years and made everyone especially thankful for sharing time with them?!?
What's your Thanksgiving Memory?

RE: Best Memories?
My oldest son had joined the Navy in 1999 right after graduation. After basic, he was stationed in Groton, Ct where he was going to "sub" school. With the holidays fast approaching, we just knew there was no way he was going to be granted a leave since he was a "newbe". His favorite dish is my Sweet Potato Souffle. So Thanksgiving Eve, I'm getting everything ready for dinner the next day, all the while tears are in my eyes...being the overly emotional, sentimental mom. I later announced to my husband everything was as ready as I could get it, I was exhausted, and going to bed. He said there was a show on the tube he wanted to see and would be up later. The next morning, I'm up early buzzing around the kitchen getting all the last minute preparatons done. I got ready to put Kyle's favorite dish in the oven and I could barely stand it! My step son grabbed me around the waist, gave me a hug and told me he already had an early Christmas present for me! Trying not to be all gloomy and ruin everyone else's day, I went along with the "closing my eyes and holding out my hand". I felt this hand touch mine. My eyes flew open, and there stood Kyle home on leave from the Navy!!! He had driven the 11 hours through the night to surprise us!!! Turns out, he told his stepbrother, (who was sworn to secrecy, but can't keep a secret if his life depended on it!), who in turn told my husband, so they were waiting on Kyle when he came sneaking in the house in the wee hours of the morning! My sons tell me I drive them crazy...I cry when I'm sad, and I cry when I'm happy!!! What a great holiday it was!

What a great memory. You made me cry, no lie! I love Thanksgiving. I have so many memories. It is my favorite holiday. Holiday where we dont need to worry about gifts. It is jus being around family friends and making memories and remembering all those in our lives who are no longer there. Thanksgiving means so much to me and bar none my favorite holiday. Time you just enjoy each others company, laugh, eat, talk, stuff yourself, relax, eat all you want and enjoy the day. It is always a very special day for me. Makes me greatful for so much. I always appreciate so much. I LOVE TO COOK. I usually make 16 pies give or take. All from scratch. I do the usual turkey stuffing and try to add a new dish each year. So we are up to many lol. One of my newest favorites is. Take cranberries and chop them add orange marmalade and chop some fresh mint (you can pass on this if you want) It makes a great cranberry side dish. Of course still have whole cranberries and jellied sauce too!

Wihr I have to say I have been blessed thus far with no catastrophes for thanksgiving. Now, that I say it I hope it dose not happen this year!! lol

Happy Thanksgiving!

RE: Best Memories?
Angelgal you had me sharing your happy tears. I am the same way. I cry at the drop of hat whether it be for a happy reason or a sad reason. LOL
I guess my best Thanksgiving memory is something I am thankful for every day. In January of 1999 my kidneys failed and I had to go to dialysis 3 days a week for 4 hours a day. Two days before Thansgiving the same year I got a new kidney and I was still in the hospital on Thanksgiving day but my family brought dinner and we had a feast in my hospital room. It was my immediate family, my sister and her family and all my in-laws.It was great.

My best memory is being a kid growing up in NBrooklyn,NY.Lived in 2 bedroom apt. and had 25 people for Thanksgiving. Kitchen just barely big enough to sit 4. Big table in living room and having to crawl across chairs to get to my seat. We had some wonderful Thanksgivings in that apt.

Funny and sad
Our Thanksgivings are so bittersweet now, we are missing my Mema, my mom and my son and it hasn't been the same since they have passed on. But one of my favorite memories is sitting around my mom's dining table, that was filled to the brim with food and people. My boy had to sit on one corner of the table so we could get his wheelchair as close as possible. Mind you, he was a growing teen with an appreciative eye for the female form and when my mom (who was quite well endowed and very pretty) leaned over him to reach for the gravy for his potatoes, his eyes widened and that stinker, ummm, tried to "bite" a certain part of her anatomy and proceeded to pat her on the rear. I watched in horror, my sisters laughed uproariously and my mom just cracked up and told him to knock it off. He laughed and laughed and there was the naughtiest twinkle in his blue eyes. Every year when I stir the gravy, I remember that moment and I get a little misty for my missing family, but I'm forever grateful for the moments filled with love and laughter that we shared.

And of course, there was the year, Mema fell asleep in the mashed potatoes after she had a "pink squirrel" cocktail. Bless her heart, she never had another cocktail again.

And then there were the years that Momma switched from her fine crystal champagne flutes to the plastic ones with the wobbly bottoms, because our Uno games had gotten so competitive and we had broken so many of her "good" ones. I'd trade all the crystal in the world for one more game of Uno with the all three of them.

RE: Best Memories?
So many wonderful memories...thank you all for sharing...and I am also guilty at crying at the happy and the sad...my son says I cry at Kodak commercials! LOL (he's not far off).

Even though I have wonderful childhood memories of Thanksgiving, the one that stands out in my mind was about 12 years ago. My now 15 year-old daughter was about 3. Both of my Grandfathers were still living, but, getting more and more frail. It was kind of sad to see them greet eachother, and sit and talk. They only saw eachother that one time a year at this point, and they were not sure they would see eachother again. Later in the afternoon, after lunch, when everyone was outside playing football, I missed Hillary-my daughter, and went inside to look for her. Found her in the den, on the couch, sitting between her 2 great-grandfathers 'reading' to them! My sister was right behind me, and we had to step into the other room and re-group to not be misty-eyed when we went back outside. We did not let them see us, just let them have their moment.

That was the last Thanksgiving for either of my Pa-paws...one passed the next Feb, and one in Sept. Even though it makes me weepy, I love to remember that picture in my mind.

What an awesome memory, dear.
That truly brings a tear to the eye. What a lovely daughter, and a lovely story. Something to cherish for sure. Blessings. NYM
