Cutting Boards
Anyone have an opinion?....I have a great maple cutting board but have seen a bamboo board I've been eying and am thinking of putting on my Christmas list....I've been reading about them on the internet and it confuses me.....I read it's too hard on knives and then I read it's great in that it doesn't collect the bacteria a wood board does...And it grows much more quickly than a tree......Help!!!

RE: Cutting Boards
I don't know much about them. I have a couple anti-bacterial "plastic" ones I use as well as my big wooden one. I think you'll be fine with it - I just use coarse salt and/or lemon juice to clean it and I haven't died yet. LOL

RE: Cutting Boards
We have plastic ones and wooden ones both, and we wash them all in the dishwasher. The dishwasher's hard on the wooden ones, they're splitting a little, but they're just cheap pieces of wood, so it doesn't matter. And I haven't died yet either.

RE: Cutting Boards
Bryan gave me a bamboo board for Christmas last year, and I love it. I haven't noticed it being hard on my knife. I wash and dry by hand every time I use it...not sure that I have to, but I do, just because I had some wooden boards split from being in the water too long. I have a couple of the pliable plastic ones that I use for raw meat, even though it would probably be fine to use the bamboo...

RE: Cutting Boards
For years when I was growing up I would babysit for a lady who had one of those cool glass ones with a design under it that you saw through on the top. Well--I always lusted after one of those dang things but never did buy one.

So last summer my yard-saling buddy across the hill here came sidling up to the house with one of those for me. I don't know how she knew I wanted one or would even like it---but now it sits there on my counter every day proudly displaying apples through the top.

That thing is awesome because it protects the counter and I also cut things on it, too. Love it. It's probably not even a true "cutting board," but that is how I use it and it works well.

I do have to be careful about being rough with it---it's glass, after all! :-)

RE: Cutting Boards
I have a bamboo cutting board, too. I haven't noticed it being any harder on my knives than any other board I've used. I have a flimsy, cheapo plastic one I use for meat. I bought the bamboo one just because I thought it was so pretty! I don't have a dishwasher, so my boards get washed and dried by hand.

RE: Cutting Boards
Actually the lady at the place where we bought our knives told us that plastic and glass cutting boards dull your knives the most, but I don't care, I just sharpen 'em when I need to. I used to have one of those glass ones Judy, I think it was corningware or pyrex - anyway, I'm not sure what happened to it, I think it broke when I dropped it on the floor after washing it.

RE: Cutting Boards
I have a thick, heavy oak cutting board that Phil bought me three years ago after we had the kitchen redone. I love it. Use wood oil on it,maybe, once a week tokeep it in good shape!

RE: Cutting Boards
Wow, really appreciate everyone's input.....Want that board now....It is pretty....LOL

I use plastic too for meats, one for poultry and one for red meat but don't generally use those everyday....The one I have is great and I love it, clean it like you, Donna, salt and lemon....but the bamboo one I've been looking at is a bit bigger and that's what I'm really looking for.....Going for the bamboo, hope Santa gets my wish list....TeeHee.

RE: Cutting Boards
I have 2 thick wooden cutting boards that have a great patina or is it better to say "finish" on them. I wash them off with soap and water and a little BLEACH, rinse well, and then I rub mineral oil into them...Keeps the wood from drying out...the mineral oil is important.

RE: Cutting Boards
Okay folks........I went out yesterday and bought me a bamboo cutting board..Was hoping to get one for Christmas but husband is away for a few days and I was bored so I went shopping......LOL.

RE: Cutting Boards
I love it Wynne. That's the kind of thing I would do.. Enjoy the board!!
