Seasoning
Does anyone have a seasoning mix (purchased) that you can't live without?
We have a local brand, Spanish Garden, that has been around for ages and they had a great "taco" seasoning that everyone around here used for everything Mexican.
I bought a new jar of it, after not needing one for absolutely ages, and it just isn't the same now. It's a totally different seasoning mix from the old. Makes me wonder who bought out their recipe.
I did discover that Old El Paso taco seasoning blend, in the large container, appears to be very similar to what we used to enjoy from Spanish Garden.
Just when you think the world is good, it changes.

Too true ... and, living up here in the frozen wastelands of the True North Strong and Free, we don't have a plethora of mexican-type seasonings. Old El Paso comes to mind as being pretty darn prominent on our supermarket shelves; there's not much else in the way of choice. We do, however, have a couple of local producers and importers of products direct from Mexico so there is a dim light on the horizon for those of us who crave that wondrous south-of-two-borders flavour! ;-)

Re: LOL
I would suggest developing a friendship with someone who is native to and travels to Mexico on occasion. They can bring back some interesting food items that are dirt cheap down there.
Vanilla is something that can be brought back easily, if not flying, and is so much less expensive than buying a small bottle of the real stuff around here.
They can also bring back all sorts of seasonings that might be hard to find north of the border. My next request will be for Mexican oregano.

RE: Seasoning
There is a company called Fiesta... Will look for it tomorrow...they are on line... You can buy their products here and on line. Some come in little pouches and are FRESH... the cumin smells so much better than that you get from a big name brand.... and yes...We can buy it in bulk in Mexico.... but... I always wonder, what crawls over it at night... !

can't sleep...
Here is the site for the Mexican spices... Made in San Antonio. I think they import from Mexico also... http://www.fiestaspices.com/?page=bbqcrabseasoning

I will share a STUPID MOMENT with you ... go to this page. http://www.fiestaspices.com/?page=duros
I bought these when we first moved here, picked them up bulk in Mexico...No instructions.... I THOUGHT they were a tomato based pasta! Well, I boiled them and boiled them and those buggers stayed .... like a piece of leather! I took them to my neighbor, who is Hispanic, and told her there was something wrong with them... she asked how I tried cooking them and I told her.... Her and her 2 daughters about rolled on the floor, they brought me in and showed me how to FRY THEM! They are quite amazing.... they puff up about 4 times their size, and you season up... Good with dips! One thing I have learned since moving here..... ASK QUESTIONS! It's like a whole other world here! They have things in the stores in the meat area I still don't know what it is....

RE: Seasoning
Lays now has a seasonal summer "chip" that might be what this is. This is a Mexican snack that has been borrowed by Lays and carries the Mexican brand name. It has the texture of of a pork rind but is made with flour, etc and has a good flavored spice on it
They weren't bad. If that is what you are talking about, they would be something interesting to make..

Sabritones
I had to go buy a bag of thos things so I could give you the name.

Sabritones, chili lime flavor

It's a snack food that Frito Lay puts out under its own name but it's an actual product of another company. They show both logos on the package. I don't think I would want to live on them but they aren't bad as a snack.

RE: Seasoning
What linebb is talking about looks like wagon wheels, before and after they're fried. They have people who sell these off of push carts down in Arizona and Mexico.
