My preference
I enjoy my winter squash without sugar, or as little as possible.
Since I enjoy the flavor of the squash I don't feel the need to overpower it with more sweetness, butter or heavy spice.
That being said, I think a little sweet, spice and butter are good, just used very sparingly, so as not to distract from the delicious flavor of my squash.
As and example, using sweet potatoes, I like them baked and plain. Nothing at all on them. I love the plain, delicious flavor so nothing is needed. Some people LOVE heaps of butter, sugar and spice and marshmallows or they can't eat them. I can eat them this way but really prefer them plain.
Something similar can be said for the winter squash, acorn and butternut in particular. I will go with just a bit of added flavoring but not much. If baked, just smear of melted butter on top, with a very light sprinkle of preferred spice and sugar. that's it. Sometimes less is more and I think this is the case here.
Just enjoy the flavor of the squash, not butter and sugar.

RE: My preference
I like a drier squash like buttercup. To that I do add some butter. I bake it plain and then add the butter separately.. That's not to say that I don't like it baked with butter and brown sugar especially if it's a very dry squash.. I'm glad the winter squashes are now coming in..
