The Indian family that runs the convenience store down the road just opened an Indian restaurant next door. The smells are awesome. I've been looking at their take-out menu and I really don't know what to try first. Their restaurant is so pretty. It is small with a little buffet.
Any suggestions for a first timer?

Most of the food is very different from American food and looks can be deceiving. Tandoori chicken is good, having a charcol flavor with flavorful spices. If you have spicy food, make sure you get a good helping of riata to help put the fire out. (cucumbers and yogurt plus other stuff) Kheer is good....dessert, similar to a rice pudding. Try some of the breads. If they have chai, make sure you try that. (flavored tea) Just try it all and see what you like. IF they might have biryani, that's good, but probably not something on a small buffet. You might suggest that they put signs up with the foods so strangers to this food will have an idea of what it is they are eating. Have fun!!!

Usually highly spiced (so we tend to eat less...) and Piggs is right about cool-downs (creamy cucumber dips, like Raitas, or chutneys with fruit...) Naan bread is devine!! Since finding a good-quality one at my local market, I use it more often than regular bread for sopping up the juices on my plate...
I wish I had a local Indian Buffet restaurant here; I got used to them in Glasgow -- and though I am close to Toronto (and TONS of famous international restaurants) there is so little "just around the corner" of interest here....Thus, I cook a lot :)
Let us know how you make out, OK????

On buffets, the heat is usually geared down to suit American tastes (I usually slip a small bottle of hot sauce into my purse when I go to Indian buffet). My favorite Indian dishes are Bhindi Masala (okra with onions, tomatoes, and spices) and Samosas (appetizers stuffed with potatoes and peas) with an onion and chili chutney.
Does anyone have the recipe for onion and chili chutney? I would be in your debt. I've tried to make it, but there is an ingredient missing.

Butter Chicken-pretty good Basmati rice-not so much...wasn't crazy about the floraly flavor Chicken Pokora-good, the only thing my picky sis would eat. she put it on the nan bread with ranch dressing...gotta love her! Nan bread-love it
Can someone tell me what the black sweet sauce was? Thought it was real good.
When I went in and picked it up I got a look at the Tandoori Chicken..will have that next.
