I'm sorry that I didn't answer your request but I just found this area in the forum where I could write back to you.
If you want to make a great black forest cake, make a simple one. Start with a good chocolate fudge cake mix, bake it to the instructions on the box. You can use any chocolate cake mix that you prefer.
After the layers have cooled (2 layer cake, 2 layers), spread some whipped cream over the top of each layer. Add some canned cherry pie filling, using mostly the fruit rather than the thick liquid in the can. Spread some more whipped cream lightly over the fruit layer and stack your cake layers, covering the cake with whipped cream on the top and on the sides. You can always add more fruit to the top in a decorative circle or even add a few dollops of cherries over some mounds of whipped cream.
