welcome to Healthy Practices.

we are starting a new year and a new way of making healthy new habits.

I would like to start this off with a question.

what do you need to accomplish??

as you will see there are different things that we start with.. some will be very easy and you will sail right thru that habit.. others will be much harder.. for me the water week is easy but I need to see if I'm still at the right amount..
getting thru the fruits and veggies will be harder and will take me longer to make that a lasting habit.

If you need to take baby steps do that.. there are more steps then are listed and we can add steps that are important to usas we go.

we are here for support, to cheer each other on, and pick each other up if we need to..

LETS BEGIN!!!

I asked the QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH?

then I didn't start us off:

eat 6 healthy mini meals a day
eat more fruits and veggies
start to walk more
do stretching exercises
stop whining

sorry...I was interrupted before...am working today!

I need to lose about 100 lbs, eat healthier, and excercise more. Don't want to say the "D" word, because I need to make permanent lifestyle change for oveall health.

no the D word is not used in here.. only healthy changes... the D word doesn't really work.. because of the way we think of it.. we are doing it just to lose weight and when we get there we go right back to our old unhealthy ways..

so we start with the drinking water to get our systems back to working right.. then we go on..

so tomorrow see how much water you drink in a day...

Small healthy meals are good and that is where I plan to start.
Then I will try to choose only healthy snacks, however I heard something today on tv that might help .....
When a person is trying to "eat healthier" and they have a tendency to crave things like chocolate for example, it can be so strong that you give in to the temptation but ...if you allow yourself one square of chocolate per day, it won't add a lot of calories and you will not feel deprived....makes sense to me!

Great idea, momto4...thanks for sharing! And, the 6 mini-meals a day is actually what we are "supposed" to eat...my ex-husband was major anorexic, then bulemic, I learned a lot about "re-feeding" and how to eat healthy by sending him to some of the top eating disorder clinics in the country. (Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to accept what he needed to do at that time). Too bad I haven't been applying what I learned to myself, but, I am ready now - that's what's important! :@)

Continue the path with small healthier meals and not the long fasts of the past.
Baby steps on that dreaded treadmill (I hate it)
Start simple weight training to try and ease the constant muscle pain.
Vow to continue my doctor visits...when I was so depressed and didn't care to live, I didn't even visit a doctor for four years and that set me way back in many many ways. Now, I have a team of physicians dedicated in helping me regain function and better heatlh. I have to listen to them and care enough about myself to follow through with their therapies.
Six months ago, I couldn't stand long enough to take a shower, Now, I can shower without sitting on the bench.
Six months ago, I couldn't walk 200 feet, much less 200 yards, Now I can walk around the block with my doggies.
Six months ago, I was 42 lbs. heavier, now my clothes are getting much looser and my energy is increasing.
Six months ago, I stopped breathing 84 times an hour with sleep apnea, and now with the weight loss, my apnea isn't as severe and I can actually get more r.e.m. sleep necessary for better health.
Six months ago, I was so anemic, I suffered chest pains and couldn't take a deep breath without agonizying pain. Today, I can practice some yoga breathing without pain and have a normal iron level for the first time in 3 years.
Now, I still can't abide a hug, it hurts to be touched and the thought of a massage sends shivers through me. So, I have to work on combating the pain and learning to deal with that part of the illness. I miss hugs and I hate avoiding contact with my loved ones.
So, I'll brave the water and keep trying with baby steps towards a healthier life.
So Cheers to all of us. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Ohhh, NYM, you really have made tremendous progress, it seems! How inspiring. Thank you for sharing! Just think with all that progress where you will have progressed to 6 months from now! That's so exciting! I'm sure I can't imagine how difficult it has been...But you should be very proud! I know I am proud of you!!

WOW NYM !!! You have sure come a long way! You must be so proud of yourself! I am smiling ear to ear thinking about how you have progressed! ;-) keep up the good work! Baby steps, Baby steps, baby steps and we are stepping right along with you!

we will be here to cheer you on as well as help you over any rough patches you come to..

I have been checking my water consumption today and it's not up to where it should be but I still have the rest of the day..

It is important to do the water.. It is a good first step towards better health.

hi I am new here I am 36 had a baby 3 months ago, so need to shed some baby fat...
also hubby had a heart attack in feb-08 so healthy eating is a must! :)
