Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
It really bugs me when people review a recipe and they haven't made it. I like to see what people like or dislike about a recipe and how they may have tweaked it. In most of the reviews people have been writing "looks good, I'll have to try this one" .... Grrrrrr! Please people, if you haven't made the recipe please don't add comments, leave that for people to actually review the recipe. I belong to Allrecipes.com and recipeczaar.com and the reviews there are quite helpful. There .. I've gotten that off my chest. LOL

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I am guilty of that.... but most of the time it is because either I have a recipe like it... and know it is good... Or can tell by the ingredients it will be. Have been cooking for years as I am older than dirt! I am so guilty of saying Yummy... and I know that sometimes bugs the .... out of people... But it is just my way of talking...

BTW... Welcome to the site... I hope you do like it here... it is wonderful and with lots of great people..

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Hi snowbird, I too am guilty of commenting and rating recipes before actually making them. I have so many recipes "saved" that I'll be linebb's age before I get around to trying them all.....Just kidding, line!
Also, the recipes that I rate, like line...I either have a similar recipe or I Love all of the ingredients. I totally understand your point. (This topic has come up before)

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
One more confession....Once, only once, I rated a recipe "5" because it was the only recipe they had on their page that wasn't rated. It bugged me that this cook had all fives and then this one lonely question mark recipe. Now the cook has a perfect page and I feel better.
Also, I think I wrote....Sounds Great! in the message. sorry

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
While I understand your point, snowbird, please understand that there are others who enjoy seeing comments, whether the commenter has made the recipe or not. Like line and rml, I can tell by the ingredients/method if it is something I will like or not. Also, there are times that the recipes is for a dish I can tell I would love, but would never have put that particular combination of ingredients together in my own creations. I will let the poster know that I think that's a great idea. I like hearing from those who have made my recipes, and their suggestions for alterations to them, but, it's also nice to know when you've posted something that sparked an interest for one of your friends. I am a member of the other two sites, as well. I enjoy all three, and am glad they are not all exactly alike. And when I rate something, it's from my 30+ years of experience in cooking, and I can tell how it would turn out. Welcome to group recipes, it's a great place. Many, many, many members here, so lots of different opinions, everyone uses the site differently.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Yup.....what they said!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Well said,Sparrow!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Calmly and responsibly answered everyone.
BUT I can't believe Sparrow started cooking when she was 2!!!!!!!!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
lol...Thanks Mystic...I was YOUNG...not that young, though! You made my day! :@)

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Well, I am going to have to say I agree with snowbird on this one. You can comment that a recipe looks good without having to rate it. If it looks good, that is what the "Does this look good?" button is for, in my humble opinion. I use that feature all the time. I do believe that if you read the different fork ratings, they imply that you made the recipe. Another thing that bugs me (as long as I am complaining here) is people who rate a recipe a 1, 2, or 3 without saying why. I posted a recipe for a dessert that I made that was delicious (because I made it before I posted it)! 13 minutes later (not 13 hours or 13 days) someone had rated it a 3 and didn't say why. If one of my recipes deserves a 3 or lower, I would like to know what was wrong with it. Maybe someday you will have to say why you are rating a recipe when you rate it.

Done venting here.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
That is a Wonderful, Valid point, frankieanne! I think that if you are going to rate a recipe, then you should be required to leave a message that explains why you do or don't like the recipe and your avatar should be next to your rating.

About Reviewers who haven't made the recipe
I had to join just to reply, I just wanted to say that I've noticed Kristopher ( I think we all know who he is) goes around making nice comments and even ratings on things that he thinks look good. In fact he has rated 2 of mine, and made some nice comments only seconds after I posted them, should I spank him? I love comments from anyone, as long as there nice of course :) About ratings, sometimes you can just tell it's going to be a 5, usually do to detailed pictures and the types of ingredients used.
I do love when someone actually does try out one of my recipes and lets me know too, so feel free.

Also I've been known to 'dish' out a 5 without leaving a comment, just because it's all been said before. You can only say Yummy so many times. Anyway you can't put it in words better than what Sparrow has already said, ' everyone uses this site differently' exactly. Lets just share recipes, and have fun.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Being someone who has been cooking for like *FOREVER* lol, I usually can tell if a recipe is going to work or not. I look at the ingredients and amounts (components, make sense?) After being around a Kitchen, you get the feel for things. Since I love to cook, I am always looking for the next best recipe to add to my collection and to share. With the ratings, some people are really nice about it, and generous.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I love it when somebody leaves a comment on one of my recipes....nice ones of course..... even if they haven't made it... It shows that they appreciate the time and effort that goes into posting and thinking of recipes that others might like...and that they think it's a good one...

rating like the others .... some of us have been cooking so long that we can tell. if we are going to love it ,just like it or hate it... I will rate a recipe if I know I'll like it.. when I do make it... I then will let them know and say what I really liked about it

for me being Gluten Free I need to change many recipes so I can eat them but I know a good recipe when I see it....( I wasn't always Gluten Free)

I agree if I give or get a low rating there should be a reason.... I gave a 3 once by mistake and wrote and told the person.... when I first started I thought there would be a little question and answer page.... hopefully that is coming.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I really don't pay any attention to the ratings as most rate their friends... WHICH IS OK with me... I have done that... one of my friends puts up a recipe I have tried before.. or I know I will like... I rate.. BUT... not just my friends..
I can see if I or my family will like a recipe by what is in it like the rest.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I love it also when someone leaves a message on my recipes.....even if they havent made it... Just knowing that it caught someone's eye and they wanted to look at it... Im like most here.... know the ingredients that I like and the ones I dont so I dont always have to make the recipe first.. to know if I will like it or not... most everyone always comes back and tells you when they make it and what they liked or disliked about it...
Which is ok with me.... Ive had people to email me and say *have you looked at such and such's recipes..... they look so good*....thats how we find good recipes....
Just my opinion tho......

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
just your opinion and mine too..zena, linda
well said

Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
It really only bugs me when someone just wants to lower your score and not only does not add a comment, but simply votes low just to skewer you... hmmm I wanted to use another word, but I am keeping it PG-rated here urgh....

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
yes that is a problem that Kris and the crew are working on.... but I agree they should have to state why they gave you a low score.... and an answer of '' because i don't like you'' is not acceptable....

Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Peetabear - lol, thanks for your response - also I was thinking too later after I posted,
"if you can't say anything nice, then don't rate at all" a little take on the 'if you cant say anything nice, then don't say anything at all" oh well - life goes on...

and its even sadder when you can review who your recent gawkers were on a particular low graded recipe and deduce who it was....and I am like, huh? why me - have I ever done anything to you? I am not one to go on a revenge kick... it is just not like me, why add another bad cook to where so many have ruined their broth already? - lol

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Because I don't like U.... Now that is funny!

Lots of that!

This site
This site is NOT Allrecipes nor recipezaar. It's a cross between MySpace and a place to find and share recipes. This is a social site, or at least that is what Kris called it in an interview that I read a while back.
That fact changes the whole idea of this site. We socialize while we share recipes. It would be pretty boring to have the same-o same-o on every site.
I've met some really nice people here because of the recipe comments and don't want that to change. Love it!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Forgot to add that there is an area to post changes to the recipes at the bottom of the comments. That area is great for making suggestions for changing the recipe.

I'm apparently in the minority.. :p
I love getting comments on my recipes, and YES - click the "yes/no" that you thought the recipe looks good or not thing - but don't rate it - please - until you've made it. I'm really interested in what happens when someone follows MY recipe - were my instructions clear? Were the quantities right? Cooking time? Did you tweak it? I want to know all of that AND where you'd rate it.

I'll try this again
For some reason this didn't post; I just got through giving out several 5 ratings because the new member canucook is on a lowballing spree and I wanted to help reverse the damage:)

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Thanks Orangeskipper...I applaud your efforts. canucook is a first class j**k. How silly to spend an entire evening, lowballing recipes they haven't made.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Now I know what you mean about the ratings.
When I look at the new recipes page I see that maybe 90% have a 5 rating. If I look at a recipe, I might make a comment but certainly don't rate ALL that I look at. I now agree with there being too many people rating recipes they havent' tried.
I might give some that I are quite similar to what I've already made a rating but certainly not every recipe that I look at.
I'm sure this will change when the new site comes online. Can't wait!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
im sometimes nervous to offer alterations though.... I do not wish to have the foodie think I know any better then they (Im here to learn as well!) - though depending upon the foodie - I will compliment them on their recipe and also share how their recipe inspired me to add this or that with great success

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Personally, I don't rate anything that I cannot give a 5, but, I don't rate every recipe I see either. Different personalities all feel differently about ratings. Some are very much "into" that kind of thing, others are not. Most of us who have been cooking a long time, (30+ years for me), and have collected cookbooks, made wide varieties of dishes, etc., over the years, can tell just by reading the recipe how the ingredients will work together, taste together, and if the steps are feasible. If I rate something a 5, it is a 5 in my book. Sometimes I wish I could give a 10! LOL Sometimes I will offer a suggestion or tell how I altered something, as well. I have also noticed that some seem to rate most everything, especially newbies, but, I don't see the problem. If someone is "into" ratings, and wants to offer that support/compliment of the recipe, then, why not? I enjoy hearing that someone, whether a friend or someone I haven't seen here before, liked a recipe, and am very appreciative when they take time to comment and rate, as well. There are soo many fabulous recipes on this site, if everyone only rated the ones they had made, then, that would greatly lessen the fun. I know I will never have enough time in my lifetime to try every recipe I want to, but, that does not make them any less worthy of a rating.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Sparow, I do the same thing. I've never rated lower than a 5. If I notice an obvious problem with a recipe, then I may leave post a message saying something like....This recipe sounds great, but I have a quick question...what temp do you bake these?
If I don't care for an ingredient in the recipe, then I'll just move on to another.
And I agree...There is no way anyone could try all of the recipes posted to this site. If it sounds good or I've made something similar and know it will be wonderful, then I rate it, bookmark it, print it out and put it in my notebook. I've tried many recipes here and have quite a few "new" family favorites.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I have a couple time when typing the recipe in.. .forgotton a ingredent and someone pointed it out... BUT... not to long ago.. I found a mistake in one of my recipes..it had gotten 4 .. 5 rates! Now they could not have made it.. as it would have flopped..
I fixed it by the way! See I store my recipes here... and go back to them.. that is how I found it! MY RECIPE WAS OFF!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I just think its inappropriate for a person to come onto a site that people have been enjoying for over a year and complain about how those people are enjoying the site! If the way people enjoy this site grizzes you, but you like the way things are done on Allrecipes and Recipezaar, then my advice to you is to continue enjoying those sites but don't try to change people on this site!

Moreover, I don't think you can dictate to hundreds of people how you, personally want people to approach your recipes. People shouldn't have to begin to wonder whether the owner of the recipe would welcome a comment or a rating when the whole philosophy of this site is based on members being easy to approach, friendliness, openness and good will! If that's not what you are looking for, perhaps you ventured onto the wrong site!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe

Wait a minute....this is supposed to be the Complaint Department.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Oh well,we all get carried away Angel!!!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Ain't that the truth!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
When I first joined GR, I used the 'Does this look good' buttons when I had not made the recipe, and the ratings button if I made it. Once I was on here for a little while, I realized how 95% of the users used the ratings function. So I gave up, and started doing it like everyone else - I feel confident that I'm still giving an honest opinion, because I've been cooking a long time myself. Guess what? I love the site no matter what! I'd rather 'conform' to keep the peace. Even though most of us are rating this way, I still appreciate the feedback in the comments. There are a lot of experienced cooks here and by receiving a 5 rating and having a comment placed on one of my recipes is still giving me valuable feedback.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
Nicely said Natalie!

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I too am guilty of it, but it is because I can actually taste it as I read the recipe. I have alwys been able to do this. I did not mean to upset anyone.

RE: Reviewers Who Haven't Made The Recipe
I don't think you are upsetting anyone, Tuilelaith. This issue has been discussed time and time again, and as you can see, this thread is a year and a half old. I think we all "agreed to disagree" long long ago. We all use the site differently, and welcome comments and feedback. I can also imagine how the ingredients taste together as I read a recipe, and have been cooking long enough to feel quite confident in rating something I have not yet tried. There are thousands upon thousands of recipes on this site, and I will never try all that I would like in this lifetime, it's just not humanly possible, but, that doesn't make any recipe less worthy of a rating if I think it sounds like something I would love.
