I use an older Canon 20D SLR, I love it...it's fast, very good for sports or fast wildlife photography, Nikon is a little sleepy in this respect (in my estimation after using them).... Canon has less digital noise at higher ISO's, so that's very good for high speed photography!! but Nikon is offering some nice DSLR deals right now...D40X is a great camera, D80 is better/more$...and Nikon is offering a 2 lens outfit right now for an extra $50.....great deal, fair lenses!! 18-55mm and 70-200mm telephotos. You can't go wrong with either of these cameras, Canon or Nikon...both offer features that the other doesn't, and you'll just have to decide which ones you need the most....for Portraits, both are great, but the lens choice is the important thing, and both offer good portraiture lenses...so do your homework and footwork for best prices...ask some pro's what they use, check out RITZ camera, online or a store, and hold the cameras yourself, take a few shots...get the prices and then decide...you'll be happy with both types!! If you want to hone your photo skills and learn about photography, go with a digital SLR...point and shoot camera's are great and have a very real niche and use.
If money is the real issue, then look at the canon XTI, and newer XSI (new release) or the Nikon d40x or d60...Pentax k10 is also very nice...all hovering on sale around $600 w/lens!! But well worth it...Do your homework!! Internet is a great source of help...lookup the reviews, priceless help!!

You can tell I’m a hack by the pics I have posted. Guess one of my major sins is centering the object in the shot according to what I’ve read in this group. Read the destructions once when I bought the camera, and said: yeah, right, like I’m going to remember all this stuff. There are so many flush mounted click switches on this thing that I change settings accidentally just picking the camera up. Good thing I only use it to take pics of the recipes I make and the eventual sunscape at dusk.
Haven’t put a lot of thought into taking stunning pictures of food. I’m too busy clicking and cooking to bother setting up a shot for the aesthetics. I download when the memory card gets full and continue on.
Good possibility this group will teach me a thing or two.
