As a matter of fact, thankfully to past discussions, I will not get one of those 'set it and for get it ovens'... I have been close many times in purchasing it - but after people pointed out the hassle of cleaning it, I knew then my choice was clear in NOT buying it... thank you btw.
I would love to replace my le cruset deep skillet pan, there's an discount outlet not too far and a short drive from me, I have thought about going over and checking it out...I also have very old revere copper bottom pans that still work beautifully, but polishing them after ever use is getting sooo boring (although they look gorgeous hung in the kitchen) so I am toying with getting a new set of some sort of pots and pans.
thepiggs 3 months, 1 week ago said: RE: Next purchase Knox, I just want to bring this to your attention, just in case it might work for you. The Kitchen Aid is so expensive and even more so if you get a higher wattage one. I got a Cooks stand mixer from JCP during the Christmas season that was very reasonably priced @ $99. Of course it was one of those loss-leaders for one of their weekend sales and the store ran out quickly so I was put on a rain check list and got it a couple of weeks later.....but other stores still had them. At the time, it only came in the brushed silver color but this year they do come in a few colors. I think mine is a 700W, with the Cuisinart being the only one at a reasonable cost that has more power. At this time, if you can find one for $129/139, then you will have a decent price. Regular price on them is $299, which is still better than KA. It has a 5 qt. bowl, with the top splash, dough hook, whisk and beater. If you can still use your old one and you have attachments, then it's still good, and if you just want more power, then you might consider the JCP Cooks stand mixer. I like mine!...but then I've never had a KA.
thepiggs 3 months, 1 week ago said: RE: Next purchase If I could go out and buy anything right now, I think it would be a stove to replace the one that is in the kitchen right now. This is a rental house and if the present stove dies, it won't be replaced. It's been mended several times but its still annoying. It's just old and past its prime and isn't something that's in the deal that gets replaced by the landlord, which is quite OK, as the rent is very reasonable. Next on the list would be a new fridge. The mice chewed all the plastic tubing in our fridge, when it was setting in the garage in KC. Hubby hasn't gotten it back to normal functioning right now, as you have to be a rocket scientist to figure out all of the turns and twists of that system, even when we bought new parts!....that aren't like the old ones. I just need a NEW one that doesn't need constant watching and also doesn't have scratches on it, which annoy me to death. New stove, new fridge and I also would enjoy having a built-in dishwasher as I've never had one. OK, I also want a NEW kitchen in another house! That would do nicely.
thepiggs 3 months, 1 week ago said: RE: Next purchase Sparow, I have Corel, which I love. Even if you don't have Corel, the pieces are still nice, if you get the ones that don't have any design on them....and they are great in the microwave.

RML, I often wondered if the seal-a-meal thingy would be worth trying or not; so, thanks for your advice! Right now I use regular ZipLock freezer bags, in all sizes & shapes -- they are SO handy & easy! And, after what you said about the seal-a-meal (and, applying Alton Brown's kitchen rules, lol!) sounds like I really don't need one.
Bathroom(s) renos going on (right as I type, as a matter of fact!!) so nothing left in the budget for the kitchen......
Recent purchases included a high-speed juicer, and a good stainless-steel blender. Wish list includes some of those new knives (I forget what the blades are made of, but they are normally used only in professional kitchens???) But, at over $100 just for the small paring knife, it'll be a while before that wish comes true :)

Yes, they will do very nicely, indeed! The 'gourmet' kitchen boutique in town sells one of the brands, so I'll have to do some research -- don't want to spend that kind of money (not that I can right now, anyway...) without knowing which kind to get...
Last time I was in the store, a restaurant owner from down the street had run in to buy a [replacement] paring knife, someone had lost his. Cost him over $150 for the knife, but he was saying that there was no way he would buy "any other brand"....

divaliscious 3 months, 1 week ago said: RE: Next purchase frankieanne - I am a big believer on le cruset - but word to the wise - they are expensive and also very heavy - so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has a hard time lifting heavy items...btw there are other very similar brands that are cheaper - even rachel ray has her own version you can get at linens-n-things and similar stores.
for indoor grilling though I love my stove top thingamajig I got at walmart for $20 - it covers two burners, has a flat griddle on one side and on the other a 'grill' makes great grill marks on chicken, steak, chops and veggies. Easy to clean and goes into dishwasher. Its also slanted a bit, so grease gently goes into the reserve section.
just a thought... but I wouldn't give away my deep le cruset skillet for anything - which I can fry, stew, whatever from stove top, to oven and right to table to serve as it is so pretty. But I was passed down this one...its extremely easy to clean.

It was a plug in rechargeable/cordless one and I could keep it in my Tyler's bag for emergency blending when we decided to eat out or have an impromptu snack somewhere. Ty could only eat processed foods or he would choke and aspirate. I burned through four mini food processors in fifteen years. The Kitchen Aid Immerson blender lasted the whole time. I only use it now for making homemade cream soup and for making homemade applesauce.
Double ditto on freezing homemade waffles. I can make them whole grain, or flavor them and freeze them for the kid. She likes to toast them in the toaster oven, slather them with nutella or peanut butter and out the door she runs for school at 6:45. I still have to get the new waffle maker, however, mine is shot. It will put a curl in your hair from the electric shock plugging it in. Too dangerous to use.

And I have to say, I LOVE my Panini maker -- it's got a non-stick surface so it's not hard to clean at all (let it cool down and wipe it with a damp paper towel, et voila!!) It gives me a chance to use up some slightly-stale bread that might otherwise get thrown out. Just make sure you will actually use it enough (or it's a waste of valuable space in the cupboards), and chose one that has sufficient weight to it (you want to 'press' the sandwich).....
kukla 2 months, 3 weeks ago said: RE: Next purchase Sparow, I had the same prob -- I wanted lids for my various-sized frying pans.....Piggs is right, glass Corningware lids are perfect if you want the option of putting the pan in an oven, and they are modestly prices at the Corningware outlet stores.
If you only need lids for your frying pans for stove-top use (not oven use) -- and you have more than one size pan -- there is another inexpensive option that takes very little space in the cupboards; I found this one at Walmart about a year ago. It's a 'fits-more-than-one-size' lid, has an optional steam vent, a handle, and it works well enough for everyday use. Teflon coated (which I didn't really want) and slightly domed with three different ridges for the various pan sizes. It won't be a perfect seal for all pans, but it cost me all of $10, takes very little space in my cupboards (one lid instead of 3 or 4...) and does the job.

He had to tell what we needed to add to the bowl next with his augmentative device and tell us what step we needed to do, then we moved the plug from the vocal output to the adapted mixer. Well, the little stinker taught us one valuable lesson. Disconnect the head switch when the beaters are lifted out of the brownie mix. He DELIBERATELY activated the head switch and he splattered chocolate batter all over the walls, the therapists, the wheelchair, the mats and of course, mommy. He laughed and laughed and laughed over his "joke". He knew what effect he could cause, without any prompting from us. We were the ones learning that day. Thanks for the memory.

If I could go out and buy anything right now, I think it would be a stove to replace the one that is in the kitchen right now.

Sparow,
I have Corel, which I love. When I've needed serving dishes, I've just gone to the outlet store, when it was open, and bought them at a reasonable price. Wal-mart also carries a nice selection. What I like about buying the the piece is that you can buy the generics in white or off white and it matches most everything.
Even if you don't have Corel, the pieces are still nice, if you get the ones that don't have any design on them....and they are great in the microwave.

sparow.....I agree with TP....Corell is great....I bought my mom Corell for Mother's Day long, long ago and I have always used it......I got a new set last a couple months ago and you can really get deal on it....I think I paid 50. for a setting of 8.....I got white so I can change color schemes...

For anyone wanting to take a look at the Cooks stand mixer, you can get a good price on them IF you watch the sales. The ads that start on Thursday should be the ones to look for. It might be Fall before they start pushing them again but you can get if for less than $149, IF you wait and keep an eye out. No sense giving them the extra money, if you don't have to!
BTW...it's also online.

I love my Corell. Mom gave me a double set one year for Christmas and I've never even broken one, depite a few falls to the tile floor. They are so light, I can easily put them away, unlike my old stoneware which weighed a ton and made my arms ache.
I want a new waffle maker. Mine gave me a horrible shock the other day and it has a frayed cord. Probably could get the cord replaced but it is so old, it might be time for an upgrade.

I was able to get a KA mixer - always wanted one - I found it at a tag sale of sorts - paid 65- for it...nearly brand new = lady said she bought it with the best intentions, and although its very quick, strong, etc. I find myself having to scrape down the sides of the bowls, and adding ingredients is a *&^## in the #$$. But stil would change a thing.

I haven't had Corell before, I've had friends that had it and just loved it. I want some of those cool square diner plates and matching pieces for my next dishes. I saw some at a great price at World Market.
For serving pieces I buy odd stuff when I find it, I just need way more than I have! LOL Ross and TJ Maxx often have great treasures, really cheap! My friend Donna can walk into the 2nd time around store, across from where she works and come out with all these great dishes/pans...I go in there, and it's all ""junk"!

OMG! I LOVE MY CORELLE WARE! I can remember being a little kid back in the 70's, and my Aunt Carolyn dropped a plate FULL of stuff on the floor. She literally picked up the plate (mad) and THREW it into the sink. Nothing, no breaks! I knew right then when I grew up my kitchen would be FULL of that stuff!!! lol---and it is.
My two boys could break an anvil if you gave them one to play with---and never broke a piece of that stuff. Love it!
I forgot to tell yin's that my REFRIGERATOR is next on the list to be replaced. It's been leaking inside it now for months---still cools like a champ, but it leaks inside it all the time I'm sopping up water with one of the cleaning towels. I have not one idea what's wrong with it...but I am in the middle of replacing an $1800 bathtub right now. Dang...

Knox,
I assume you have an ice maker. One of our problems was that there was a leak in the fridge from one of those lines.
You might try turning off the water to the ice maker/door and see if the problem stops.
Then you might know if it's the water line or something else.

Re: Cooks appliances at JCP.......we bought one of their coffee makers and were vere inpressed.........didn't pay more than $20 on sale.......really nice quality.
What I need right now is a new hand mixer. I have a Cuisinart that was purchased at Service Merchandise....how long have they been out of business? The cord where it attaches to the base has exposed wires and it has them along the cord as well. I guess it's time!!
Guess I'm like Wynne....I've been checking them out online for weeks. I was going to replace it with another Cuisinart, but from what I've been reading, I get better options and price with a Kitchenaid. I love my KA stand mixer so I'll probably be thrilled with it.

Wynne, if you freeze a lot of stuff then you may still want to get the seal a meal. I bought one last year and returned it because 1) I don't really freeze much 2) It was hard to use.
The handy sealer is little and fits in the drawer. The baggies aren't very expensive, but they're basically zip-lock "space" baggies. I keep the sealer in the box of baggies. You can always buy it, try it and if you don't like it....return it.

LOL! I with you, Wynne & Pat -- I spend hours, days, weeks -- whatever it takes to research any new purchase 'to death' before I buy anything. Drives my hubby mad!!

Cost him over $150 for the knife, but he was saying that there was no way he would buy "any other brand"....

most large square types of waffle makes usually allow you to remove the 'plates' and turn them around for a griddle like surface - easy to make paninis in..mine opens completely up so I could use it as a griddle - which I have never done. - I looked and checked mine is a black and decker - it makes four waffles at a time
though I just did a check - target.com has two for $29- makes two square waffles and you switch out irons to make sandwiches...
but here's a link to a black and decker one

Ruskingirl,
Panini Maker = Painin-the-assi-to-cleani... Had one and got rid of it... Need a new toaster too? you can resolve both issues with a small countertop Toaster Oven. I got a toaster oven for my wedding (1994) and I didn't take it out of the box for 10 years! Now I the toaster is in the closet. I love it, it makes great toasted sandwiches, as well as toasting bread, bagels, waffles, etc... cooks small portions. I love it... I can't believe it took me ten years to try it. I guess, cuz we never had one growing up, so I wasn't familiar with it... Why did I take it out of the box. Had a major disaster and my stove/oven blew up (literally) and it took about 6 weeks to replace and resolve with insurance co. and I was desperate for cooking alternatives.
What do I want to get next? If we're going big, I need a new floor, and want a bigger oven that is a convection oven.... Going more reasonable - I would like a new bread machine. My old one died after 10 years of pretty constant use.

I've always wondered how good one of the Le Creuset grill pans work. Giada deLaurentis uses one on her show all the time. I don't really "need" one as I have a nice propane grill. But I think if I was going to buy something else for my kitchen, I'd give one of those a try!
divaliscious 3 months, 1 week ago said:
RE: Next purchase
frankieanne - I am a big believer on le cruset - but word to the wise - they are expensive and also very heavy - so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has a hard time lifting heavy items...btw there are other very similar brands that are cheaper - even rachel ray has her own version you can get at linens-n-things and similar stores.
for indoor grilling though I love my stove top thingamajig I got at walmart for $20 - it covers two burners, has a flat griddle on one side and on the other a 'grill' makes great grill marks on chicken, steak, chops and veggies.

Sparow,
Many glass lids will fit cast iron skillets. I used to have a couple that came with them and you can use any that are the right size. If you have a Corning/Revere Ware outlet near you, look for the round lids. Oh, glass lids for crock pots will work, if you can find one the right size.
Maybe you can find one the right size.
If it's not cast iron, you still may be able to find a replacement lid that will work for your skillet.

Gramma58---An immersion blender is one of those things Emeril uses and calls "a boat motor." You have a long stick and it goes down into the bottom of the pot or bowl to blend with but doesn't touch the bottom with it's blades.
Great for whipping together gravies, sauces, whipped milk/cream, etc.
I don't have one, but I'd like to get one some day!

Used to use my immersion blender all the time. Had a Kitchen Aid brand.

Wynne, I love my immersion blender! It's a large-department-store make -- Beaumark, from The Bay (Canadian Dept store, similar to Sears or JC Penny) so I don't know who really manufactured it....
High to mid-priced, but it came with a whisk attachment AND a mini-blade (for using in the mini-chopper mode; comes with it's own bowl) so it gets used more than a simple hand-held immersion blender. It's so much easier to use it when purée-ing hot soups, etc, then using the blender....and the mini-chopper is great for smaller quantities (don't have to haul out the food processor...)
And I have to say, I LOVE my Panini maker -- it's got a non-stick surface so it's not hard to clean at all (let it cool down and wipe it with a damp paper towel, et voila!!) It gives me a chance to use up some slightly-stale bread that might otherwise get thrown out. Just make sure you will actually use it enough (or it's a waste of valuable space in the cupboards), and chose one that has sufficient weight to it (you want to 'press' the sandwich).....
kukla 2 months, 3 weeks ago said:
RE: Next purchase
Sparow, I had the same prob -- I wanted lids for my various-sized frying pans.....Piggs is right, glass Corningware lids are perfect if you want the option of putting the pan in an oven, and they are modestly prices at the Corningware outlet stores.

Pat!!! When we were teaching my dear Tyler the "cause and effect" switch we hooked his head switch up to an adapted mixer. He had to press his head switch to activate the beaters. We were making brownies for the very first time at therapy.
Of course there was the time, I used my charged immersion blender on a bowl of chowder and the bowl was too shallow and I sprayed the table next to us with Ty's clam chowder. I paid for the dry cleaning of the their clothing on the spot. I was so embarassed. They were charming people about it. Bless them. Yes, live and learn the hard way.

Tonight, my DH is on his way to a BBQ competition at a nearby city. There is an Ikea near there and I've been kicking myself for the last 8 months that I didn't pick up the dutch oven I saw there.
