Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
We all have so many talents between the many foodies here, what's your fave thing to do that's creative besides cooking and baking?

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Reading cook books and cooking magazines! Talk about 1 track. I enjoy sports and movies also!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
hehe pleclare...

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Knitting and working in my yard/garden.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Crossword puzzles. I'm absolutely obsessed with finishing the Sunday New York Times crossword every weekend. My husband just laughs at me. And reading, walking, antiquing.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Hi everyone, it's been a while since visiting...I love to decorate and sing. My dream is to have a Bed and Breakfast...get a historic home, renovate and decorate it and then make some amazing meals to serve people. Justjakesmom, my mom used to crosswords all the time...I couldn't take the time to work them, it takes such patience... ; )

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Used to sew; not so much now. Still crochet while listening to tv or my favorite movie scores, read when I can, nothing too heavy or sad, obsessed with scrabble, or cribbage. Love to decorate when I can, still fuss with the orchids and the african violets weekly. Will weave a basket now and then to keep my hands in practice.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Welp! Never much time to do much more than cake/cater and think about caking/catering, lol!!

But I do like to plant and garden, read about that stuff and shop. Shoo--eee do I love to shop! Not for like the whole day at a time or whatever...but for a few hours here, few hours there.

I also love my laptop...as y'all can tell!!

--Kn0x--

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Working puzzles-sudoku and other number puzzles and logic puzzles; genealogy; crocheting; and of course, collecting cookbooks and reading them over and over!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Beach... I love to swim.. and fish. I do the crosswords too! Carry book of easy ones in car.. so when I pick up kido's I have something to keep my mind busy while waiting. That and talk radio.. Love talk radio.. And I read... Inhale books..

Ah.. pleclare.. it's about that avatar! Like sports do ya? DUH!

Woops..
U said creative.... Gardening? I do a lot of that... But not this time of year.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Yes,I like sports Linda!!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I guess my favorite is gardening. Others are singing, reading, fishing, horseback riding, walking or hiking in the woods.....love the ocean, just being there.......used to do a lot of sewing too, but it's difficult for long periods now.......love to decorate, love to paint (not walls)......and I love being with my Granchildren!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Wow! What a truly diverse group we are! I love to read and crochet! Since I couldn''t do both at once, felt guilty reading when I have a couple of afghans to do as gifts, have discovered audio books...LOVE them!!! Riding "Vanessa" with hubby...never thought I would enjoy riding a motorcycle! I do calligraphy, and love my Cleveland Browns football!! (Have gotten some GREAT recipes off this site for our football parties!) Love flea markets! Hubby has forbidden me from watching Trading Spaces!! LOL Decorating is a work in progress!!

P2M...I'm so jealous!! I sing with the car radio, but only when I'm alone!! Can't carry a tune in a bucket!! ;)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I like to paint, write and sing music, photography, crochet in the winter - though I do very simple things, always wanting to do more sewing, gardening.

Wish I could do crosswords, was never very good at that - I praise all of you who do them regularly!

I noticed no one said exercising..lol

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Hey knox - how did that big cake job go? I so want to see a photo!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
exercising,what's that??

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
If God would have meant for me to touch my toes, He would have put them on my knees!!! ;)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Like that one angelgal!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Here here, angelgal!

I love singing, music of most any kind, going to concerts or to local places to her live music, getting to gether with friends, cooking for them, shopping, traveling, painting/redecorating, working in the flowers, I always up for just about any adventure that doesn't involve heights! LOL

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Re exercise: Our elementary gym teacher's name was Mrs. Butterfield - she was as round as a you guessed it, a butterball turkey (which were somewhat new in the 70's) - so of course naturally we would call her Mrs. Butterball, along with that song, "heads, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes" we were forced to sing and 'do'

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Hey Diva.. I exercise and still am as round as a butterball! I swim every day... not just stand there .. but sit on a "noodle" and pedel like I am riding a bike for about 30 minutes.. then do about 15 minutes of just arms... Then swim with Haley (5 year old) Lucky here, as I have from late March to November for this... Thinking of buying a granny bike..no fancy gears... just sit and go, one with fat tires for the winter.. I get to bored just doing a stationary... Haley does that heads, shoulders, knees thing... wanted me to do that... She got the look.. of don't push it.. She is my exercise partner.. Justin, 11, is a video junkie... have to make him. Person who invented those needs to be shot!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I thought gardening WAS exercising??? I exercised a lot when I was younger.......doesn't that count for anything??????

Hey, angel......don't be jealous....I can't crochet or knit....all thumbs and NOO patience!! Wish I could....just couldn't get it!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Of course, I really enjoy gardening, both veggie and decorative. I love the spring flowers and have collected many wild violets, including some that are actually no longer wild and have had a helping hand by humans, to become what God didn't intend. Also do enjoy iris and bleeding hearts. I enjoy more than I can think of at the moment, but since it's spring, I can remember those!
I also enjoy doing sudoku puzzles and reading anyting, from how-to books to farming a organics. Also like archeology and historical things. There is not enough time in one lifetime for getting in all the things that I would like to do. Fishing has pretty much been put on hold, since I don't have a current state drivers license and refuse to buy and out of state license....and I am just a short walk down the road! grrrrr I love fishing for crappie and blue gill/sunfish. I absolutely hate catfish and will gag if I smell them when they've been cleaned....even the stuff in the restaurants. YECH! I would rather eat CARP than smell catfish.
Oh, speaking of carp, I love water gardening, especially our koi. It's a challenge, to have koi and live plants, all in the same body of water! Love our koi and goldies!
Also love my cats.
Used to love crocheting, too, but I just need to get my rear in gear and start again....used to love making at least one big afghan each winter, covering up with it as I crocheted away. NO knitting for me, I just couldn't get past the first row thing.
Also used to sew and haven't down that in ages, either. I keep saying I'm going to start again, as I don't care for what's available now.
Too many things, so little time.
Can't stand ANY sports, so at least I'm not glued to the TV on the weekends, at least not for sports!
Notcho, pm me, wo we can get together online for scrabble and maybe cribbage! I could handle that!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
About the crocheting....I bought a pattern-a-day crochet calendar this spring, just so I could have something to do. If anyone is interested in some of the things, just pm me. I'm sure I can get some copied off and sent to you. There are some easy and hard things in it. Cute, too!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Ohhh I would love to learn how to do granny squares again... Im such a straight crocheter - very boring - despite the interesting triple stich I do which makes it go very quick. and how to do a hat...I have books, but there is something so nice when you learn with someone next to you.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I love to crochet... each year I do at least enough blocks for one Afghan that goes to Warming of America... the nice thing is I don't have to put the thing together..!!

my first love is painting and sketching. I love most crafts... I want to learn stain glass next.. i love to read everything and anything..

i really like poking in junk stores and flea markets... cookbook collecting of course..

I love my cats... and the work I do with the feral cat community.... i love gardening. both veggies and flowers... I know a great deal about veggies, not so much about flowers..

i can't swim.... i can't sing or play an instrument... I don't think Chop Sticks on the piano counts.!!! oh well

and i like to do crewel work and embroidery....

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I see that several foodies here mentioned flea markets, hey wynnebaer where r you in all this?!

What's some of the best deals you have come across and bought at a flea/tag/garage sale?
This might be better as a new thread..but we still haven't heard from everyone yet...

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Diva - could you PM me how to do your triple stitch??? I'm always looking for simple afghan ideas. I can't do anything complicated, but I've got a couple of patterns that are beautiful!! I've never done a granny square...just can't get the knack! My granny tried to teach me to crochet, but I was too young to appreciate her gift! I know everytime I pick up my crocheting, she's in Heaven looking down at me and saying..."if you just would have listened to me!" ;) That woman could crochet ANYTHING!! So between what she taught me and what I picked up in books and on the internet in the past few years, I haven't done badly. And I agree, it is so much nicer when someone is next to you!!

Ladies - I envy your gardening skills! I honestly have a "black thumb"!! My claim to fame is I actually killed an air fern!!!! Hubby plants all the flowers and I "supervise"! Go ahead and laugh...my family and friends think it's a HOOT!

Sweet dreams my friends! It' past my bedtime and tomorrow is Monday and a work day!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I can teach you both how to do a granny square...

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Sure, I would be happy to show you my 'triple stich" secret lol

IN fact I thought years ago, I made it up (not!) but its way easy... I will see what I can do for you tomorrow....

and yes, pleasse share your granny square secrets...
gots to take out dog for last walk of the night, despite his dreaming and barking in his sleep - its too funny to watch! I always wonder what he's dreaming about, some times his paws go super wild...as if he's running in the woods.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I have an afghan that you guys might be interested in. It's two colors, with a row that drops down into the other color, making a pattern that looks like a cat's face, with paws, peering over a fence. (I don't think it's hard, as I did something similar, but with a completely different outcome.) My friend gave me the afghan when she was cleaning out. It's heavy and warm!
One year I made granny square slippers for lots of people. The toe end had a pretty rose crocheted into the center of the square. The sole was just one solid square, nothing fancy. They were easy to make and very cute.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
OK, gotta ask. Does anyone know what my present avatar is?...besides a joke. It's more that what you might think.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I know how to do a granny square. :)
Haven't crocheted in a few years but I do know how to do it. Made a few afghans in my time. And sold a couple to boot.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Here I am.....Had my sons graduationa dn the girls are here so I haven't been able to be on much lately.....

My mother tried to teach me how to crochet once and it ended up in a huge arguement because I'm left handed and just couldn't grasp the concept....Never tried it again...

Love football...I am a huge New Englend Patriots fan

I also do love flea markets, yard sales, second hand stores, etc....

Love to do day trips....There is so much to see in New England no matter what direction the car goes

Just getting into gardening in the last few years or so.....

Love to play poker........And I'm pretty good at it too....:)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Oh, and I love to play pitch...

And I'm pretty good at darts....Although the more I drink, the better I get....Doesn't make sense, does it....:)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
actually - in regards to darts, I wholeheartedly agree - Im with ya there Wynne -

Hoping you had a wonderful time with the kids too!

Thepiggs: - I am clueless (nothing new there) ::clearing throat::

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
TP....I know! I know!...but I'll let someone else reveal it.

I read tons of books. I also like to play chess, paint, ride my motorcycle during good weather, and I love any type of needlework.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
rml,
You got the avatar figured out! It was a joke from another onlin group that I just couldn't resist posting here. I hear it's good with Jamaican Jerk!
Now, for the BIG question...drum roll...
Is that you and your significant? Be careful, eeks or try to steal her away from you.
Isn't needlework a bit sissy? Oh, if Rosie Greer can do it, I guess you can also.
:-p

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
OMG, TP......Too Funny! Yes it's me and my "significant" other...

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I would enjoy any and all crochet patterns!!! Thanks!

TP - I know exactly the patter you're talking about with the cats! My mother crocheted both my boys afghans in that pattern...one was red, white, and blue...the other black, gray, and white. Both were really pretty!! I would love to try the slipper pattern, too!

WB - LOVE football...been a Browns fan since I was a little girl! Sometimes I wonder WHY we put ourselves through it every year!!!

What a great group this is!! ;)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I like to shoot pool...I can not practice for a couple months or so and still wipe you out. Yes I am a 'shark' teehee. Go ahead, ask my sister, she'll tell you the same. I swear that's why her hubby didn't like me for the longest time. Cuz I rock the table! And yes, I am tooting my own horn here....that's all part of the game for me. :)~~ good times, good times

I love to read, Stephen King is the man!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I've heard about you and a pool table....TeeHee....I wish I was that confident about the things in my life that I love to do...Although I must say, I kick butt at poker and know it...:)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Angelgal, I'm sure I still have the pattern, it's just not in the same state. I will have to look through my "girl hobby" stuff to see If I can find it. Don't know how soon that will be though.
I have a couple in my calendar patterns, though. One is for children, the other, I'm not sure of. I also have one that is like knee-high boots, with laces!
I bet we can find some nice patterns, if we look around. There is, or was, a crochet pattern group in the yahoo groups, IF you can find it. Who only knows what they might have if you ask.
Yes, the pattern is rather easy for those slippers, just gotta get through the fancy one and the rest if a piece of cake!
The cat on the fince pattern should be fairly easy to follow, if you have an afghan in front of you to follow. Just simple stitches and nothing extra-fancy.
I make camo-colored hats and scarves for hubby, for him to wear hunting, when it's very cold out. I'd forgotten about those. How easy, just make a double or single stitch and keep going until it's the right size, length!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
speaking of steven king - wasn't is so surreal when he got hit by that van, from a guy driving the vvan saying his dog in the van was going out of control, or something along those lines....

freaky, just freaky - so glad he's back to writing, like what a book a week? Fave book of his I love is called the Talisman, they should so do a movie about that one!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
wow crocheted boots with laces - now if that doesn't take me back to the 70s, nothing will - you would be one hot momma TP if you not only wore those, but sold them...

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Diva..he worked that van accident into his miniseries Kingdom Hospital. That was a couple of years ago. And the Talisman is an awesome read (one of my favorites)...did you know him and Peter Straub did a follow up to that called Black House? It's good too. I don't know if there is a movie in the works for The Talisman but I do know they are making Bag of Bones into one.....can't wait. I thought The Myst was really good. Of course me being a 'true' fan I thought it was a lot of comedy...very good laugh for me but also had a very big lesson.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
can't do the knitting and crochet thing... Hate sitting.. U can ask those who get on IM with me... I am always coming up missing... Have to move! I did do some country art stuff... lots for Christmas.. Huge lawn things.. sold some too... Got carried away. Plus too hot here to do that... Did do a quilt years ago... And used to make all my shorts and PJ's.. just lost interest.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I like to do scrapbooking. I don't pretend to be any better at that than I am at cooking, but some of my pages actually look pretty nice. I also enjoy writing, and am flirting with writing my memoirs, for what they'd be worth for anyone to read.

I also enjoy power napping. Never underestimate the power of the power nap.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Linda, I just mailed you a couple of skeins of yarn, with a crochet hook and a beginners instruction book. You should have a couple of potholders or hats made in no time! bwa hahahahahahah
We except pictures next week, when you are back home! :)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I also love reading. I have devoured at least 25 books this year alone. John Grisham, Steve Martini, James Patterson, Lisa Scottolini, Robert Ludlum, Michael Connelly . . . . Only do it in the morning with my coffee. Also love gardening. We have a fish pond also, can't remember who has koi? We only have gold fish - not willing to risk losing koi to the blue herons.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I have the koi. All I can say is that if I ever find a bird eating my fish, jail or no jail, that bird will have eaten its last meal. We've managed to avoid the birds with barricades, etc. but we have to be careful of what we are doing. Having cats around probably doesn't hurt any, either.
I have some beautiful shubunkins and comets. Also have some white goldies with red spots that I love. We also have the basic plain goldies but they just aren't as pretty.
We love our fish! Trying a lily this year, since I have a small pond that will house some of my pretty white goldies and the lily will certainly be safe with them. They should be quite complementary to the lily!
Glad to see another fish person here.

This one is not free. It's not the one I was talking about but it's basic squares and is constructed the same way.

Another, but free

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
We haven't lost any fish to the herons either. But they do come around. I think having Lincoln (our choc. lab) in the yard helps. We have about 23 more or less fish - hard to tell with the new babies every year. One, I call Luther, is about 10 ins. long, an all black "gold fish". LOL It's fun to sit and watch them.. I've named a lot of them. My husband thinks I'm nuts. Nothin new there!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
TP - Thanks! will check them out when I get home from work!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I love the idea of koi, but my neighbor's experience has kept me fish free. (The masked bandits kept beheading his beloved koi, I'd wake up to hear Bill cursing a blue streak each a.m. because the critters had circumvented his chicken wire or other traps)

TP....I'll pm so we can do the scrabble online, or cribbage as soon as things settle down a bit. Hubby is on a cribbage kick and we keep playing each evening, so he can learn to count again. We are working on it. Forget scrabble, it is way too hard for him yet. Hugs honey.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Justjakesmom, That is so great for you, did you know (maybe you do) that having a fish pond is really good 'feng shui' practice in bringing wealth, health and happiness to you and your family. The koi and goldfish are said to be able to turn into "dragons' in Chinese mythology. And it is always good to have at least 9 fish, with one of them being black so that the black one absorbs the negative energy (you know the ying yang thing). It is said that the fish really bring in wealth but big time... check out wofs.com if you or anyone cares too...

I so love fish, I have tried numerous times to have an aquarium - I wont share stories but one, but it never worked out - though one time, I kept losing one a week (goldfish) and couldn't figure out why - no evidence, nothing... until I found the fat and I mean fat cat, legs sprawled with each paw precariously on each edge of the aquarium doing her own fishing....after that, I said no more, I just can't do it to them (the fish)

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
I had sea monkeys when I was little..........................

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Diva, I can't do aquarium fish either. Too much cleaning, etc. The son did have a gold fish when about 3, it died (of course) and that was enough for me. LOL Our outdoor gold fish pond, however, is completely self filtering/cleaning with a bio filter - listen to me, like I know what I'm talking about! That's what he tells me anyway and who am I to challenge it. LOL

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
My daughter won a goldfish at the carnival one year....Her father got her an aquarium for it along with all kinds of buddies....Her brother, 3 then, decided one morning to feed the fish....They all exploded and that was the end of fish for us......She said, "Mommy, I don't think I want fish anymore.".

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
We were out this morning, bailing water from all the ponds. We have the nursery again this year, which now has a few koi babies from our most senior lady, Goldie, and I had to be very careful while taking water from that tank (stock) so I wouldn't get the babies.
We were carrying the water across the yard, to our old stock tank that HE brought back from KC in March. I've already got a few of my pretty comets, long tails, in it and had it only about half full for now. After the rain last night and the water we added from the others, it's now nearly full. BTW...the wee ones are really growing, even for just being hatched a week. They've gone from being just little tiny slivers to now large enough to actually see and keep an eye on.
It rained like the dickens here last night, and topped off the fish "ponds". The garden has standing water and the sidewalk to the rear of the yard was a stream of running water, running back to near the house and onto the drive and out to the ditch.
I was out HARVESTING from the garden this morning, when another front rolled through. A very dark cloud darkend the sky, then it got light again and then the wind started again...and the heavy RAIN. I was soaked. (I cut some tiny heads of broccoli, just to make sure none of it bloomed on me, and then a few nice leaves of romaine. Let me tell you, that broccoli certainly tasted good, straight from the garden! I tasted it for quite a while, afterwards!)
It's now raining again, with yet another tornado having been spotted. I am sick of rain. 4-5" last night was ENOUGH!
I may be chasing my koi through the yard at midnight, with nets and flashlights at midnight! grrrrr
Tornado warnings now in our area, with sirens going off. BYE!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
be extra careful TP, please.... thoughts are with you to be extra safe in all this.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Wynne!!!! the fish exploded? OH MY! We have one very fat goldfish. We did have 4 but "Jaws" ate his buddies. I didn't know that the dang things ate their own. He is now the solo occupant, except for the snails. I hate the smell but like the water from the tank to supplement the plants, I use it on the gardenias and the shell ginger (RIP, since hubby cut it to the ground).

I had a very large tank as a kid with angel fish, neons, lots of others I can't remember; until it exploded one night and we had fish flopping in mom's oh so cool orange shag carpeting. She didn't let us have another fish tank after that episode. The smell never quite left the carpet, ewwww.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Be safe TP..

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Hope all is well TP!!

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Back, at least for a while. Had three different tornado sightings and warnings this evening, with even more heavy rain and I think we've had at least a couple more inches this evening, most of which is now running through the basement.
I heard on the TV that this June....as of the third, already has a new record rainfall. I'm sure the record will be quite high this month, as we still have several days of rain in the forecast.
I would just like to put a big umbrella up, over the yard, just so it can dry out.
I hope the storms have now disappeared, at least until tomorrow.

RE: Fave hobby besides cooking and baking?
Reading - Fiction, Non Fiction, Historical (especially the Civil War), newspapers, magazines - I love my library

Sewing - on the machine, counted cross stitch, cross stitch and embroidery. I love to embroider pillow cases.

Genealogy - and everything that comes with that

Cemeteries and Graveyards - I could spend the entire day there

Outdoors - boating, fishing, crabbing, going to the beach, walking, just sitting outside reading and drinking sweet tea
