Ant hills
Ok, so maybe none of you are hassled by ants but our yard has had numerous ant piles this year... I was mowing and was like 'what the??!!!'. Grrr. So I decided to use an all-natural method of getting rid of them. Most pesticides are harmful AND we love our birds, squirrels, raccoons, possums, deer, etc... Anyway -- I learned this method while living in Georgia (biting red ants - yikes!): Take a shovel full of ants from ant pile #1 and move it to ant pile #2. Take a shovel full of pile 2 ants and plunk them down on ant pile #1.

Obviously it behooves you to work quickly (!) but it seems that ant colonies cannot cross-mingle and they end up combating each other to death. Didn't mean to gross you out but it seems to work and keeps pesticides out of our yard.

Yours in dandelions -- Colleen, Naperville, IL.

Thank you Colleen I know ants are territorial if it works use it, that method is better then using chemicals. Thank you for the information I will try that if the problem persist in my yard.

RE: Ant hills
My aunt colonies do not live that close together for the shovel solution, but I like it. My natural solution is to give the aunt beds a good scalping with a riding lawnmower blade every two weeks. It might not get rid of them totally but it brings me pleasure to bite them without getting bitten.

Fire Ants
Drenching is the treatment of individual mounds, once it is confirmed that ant activity has been reduced. This can be done any number of ways. You can boil water and pour it on the mounds. Or use a commercial drenching solution.
Drench with the fire ant control formula - compost tea/molasses/citrus oil. The commercial product is called Garden-Ville Fire Ant Control.
Natural Control - Lizards, birds, other insects and microorganisms. Compost tea, and beneficial nematodes. Beneficial microorganisms in the compost tea and in the gut of nematodes seem to be doing the actually control.

Just musing on how much it would cost to purchase or rent an anteater.
