HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
Are you on top of things? Have you learned anything new, went back to school ,join a class,or trying a new hobby. Took a look at yourself changing bad habits, changed your lifestyle?

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
I have been dieting...not just for weight loss. I want to get in the best of health, and have the energy to do the things I want to do. I am always reading ,even things that at first I dont think is something I would like.Dont judge things that you havent learned about. How do you know until you tried it? I seem to be less a doer these days ...working on that. I have joined a weight loss group, started walking more. And planning a end of summer party. Also I seem to be changing my mind on my decor. I want to go light and airly ,which is very diffent from my normal decor of dark colors and old fashion things. I seem to be changing alot of my old ways and ideals lately. HOW ABOUT YOU?

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
I really really need to quit smoking.. I could use some success stories to give me some hope. I have been smoking for 20 years, and have tried to quit three times, with no luck.. My husband in waiting for a new kidney, and we both really need to address some unhealthy habits..

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
Happy to hear from you,Peaceandlovejojo. I never had the smoking habit. But I know from family and friends its a hard one to defeat. I hope you have a sucessful time defeating it. We are here for you. I think a" kick the smokin habit "group would be a great thing. Maybe someone will invent one. But even though we dont have the same bad habits...we all can give each other support. Thats what FRIENDS is for. Praying that all will go well for your husband .

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
Some of you already know this, so, sorry for the repeat! But, After a lifetime of being a couch potato and being overweight most of my adult life, I was diagnosed with Diabetes this year, and with "advanced arthritis for your age" in the hip and groin a couple of years ago, and bursitis in my thigh. The dr. that diagnosed the arthritis etc told me walking on flat surfaces, water aerobics, or a stationary bike would really help. Well, walking was so painful at first I didn't do it. No water aerobics in our small town, and couldn't afford a stationary bike, so I did nothing. The dr. that diagnosed my diabetes said "you don't have to exercise every day, just every day that you eat"
So, I started walking an hour a day the last week of June. I go about 3 miles. I have lost about 17 lbs, but more in inches. I had lost about 10 lbs from Jan - June, without trying, which was one of the symptoms. So, last year I wore size 20 in jeans (had 22's the year before!), and a size 26-28 in tops. I am now down to a size 16 reg in pants, and an 18-20 in tops! I also started water aerobics last week, which I love, and is also supposed to help the arthritis. The arthritis is still there, but, I feel better overall, and now feel like it's possible for me to get back down to a healthy weight! I have completely cut out regular sodas, (I could drink 5 or 6 a day, if not more) and refined sugar, and am cooking healthier - less cheese, bread and butter, etc. More grilled lean meat and veggies. Making my own marinades from fresh ingredients, etc. Just had a follow up with the regular dr, and he was very pleased. People are beginning to notice that I have lost weight, and that is very inspiring!
If this lifelong confirmed couch potato can break her bad habits, you can too! ; )

SPAROW
Always happy you pop in.Its very inspiring to hear from one who knows how it is.Happy to hear things are going better.I know its hard, but it sounds like you are getting a handle on things. Good going! Wish bad habits were easier to break. But at least when you do you feel like you can take on the world. Wishing everyone a great day!

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
After smoking for over 30 years, I quit moking 5 months ago. I was in the hospital with the bad kind of flu (aren't they all?). I decided not breathing was a bad thing. Just know that when you quit that the cravings are much worse than anybody has ever said. The only thing worse is not breathing. Hold your breath until the craving lets up. Then decide if you really want that cigarette. Just don't try this while you are driving. My Dad died from lung cancer when he was 49 years old. Quit today, Thinking about quiting is just a form of self abuse. Set a date and stick to it if you can't quit right now. Yes right now. L.

Sparow.... good for you girl..... thats wonderful.......Im so proud of you...

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
Great job Sparrow! You may even find that as you get in better and better shape your arthritis may improve somewhat too. I know that working through the pain is the hard part. My husbands secretary has rheumetoid arthritis but she goes to the gym everyday. She says it helps her to stay active. I'm very inspired by her.

Lasaf - congrats on quiting smoking. I quit smoking 11 years ago. Probably not a day goes by even still today that I don't think at least once about having a smoke... I look at my kids and think, they need me... I don't want to die young. My grandpa died of emphasema (sp?) related pneumonia , my dad died at 60, and my mom at 45...

RE: HAVE U UPDATED YOURSELF?
Wow, deedee, you're parents were so young......so sorry

My philosophy is to just have an everyday commitment to health. Now that doesn't mean never eating something that is bad for me (like sweets and burgers) but to have something that I do (like going to the gym 5x a week, taking supplements and eating healthy in general), to counteract the effects. I believe in preventative maintenance. I don't want to ever get to the point whereI have to say to myself, "OMG! I have to lose a 100 lbs or I'm going to die!". I can manage the occasional 10-15 lb weight gain and even THAT is hard. I just don't want to put myself through that--it's not worth it.
