Your Kids & Food
I hope some of you will respond to this as it may help others in the group. What are some tricks, tips, and techniques YOU use to get YOUR kids to try various foods they may not want to try?

Help Me Out
Please share your tips so we can keep the group alive and interesting.

RE: Your Kids & Food
Well first off I usually wait until my son is ready to try the new food, it usually takes a few tries, like with avacodoes it went from UGH and spitting them out, to okay I will eat them if you cut them really little and mix them something (usually linguine sauce, or Zesty Italian dressing, depending on what we were eating) and now he just eats them and enjoys them, same thing with peppers, also he has a friend a school who likes red peppers and that is when he decided they were sweet.. Maybe if you can find a healthy eater, invite him/ her over it might get your child to try the food out.
Like I mentioned in another post here, my son hates onions. So what I do when I make spaghetti sauce, or sloppy joes is just blend about a half of an onion with half of a pepper and then add a little bit of broth to mix it all up. He always says he loves them.
I try not to push the onion thing to much as he eats really well for a 9 year old, and has for awhile. I just think he hates them for some reason and I'm probably not going to try to push those on him.

Also this year he just started eating little grape tomatoes, so we decided to grow our own in pots- which are turning out amazing- right now they are green. I think when you grow your food, it makes them want to eat it, or encourages them a little bit more.

Getting them involved with cooking is always another way to get them to try new things. .

The main thing is if your just starting out, start them off right away on a healthy diet, then they won't know any different, these foods won't be so shocking and new to them.

I guess in the end it takes a lot of patience and persistence. One minute they hate something the next they love it, just like one minute they don't know how to tie there shoes but the next minute they are double knotting. When they are ready there ready, at least that's been my experience. I'm lucky enough that it really hasn't been much of a problem, just some little things here and there.

I'm not sure how it would have been if he had just refused to eat any vegetables, like you see on that show Honey We are Killing The Kids. I can't believe there are children AND parents who never go into the produce isle, and don't even know what an avocado looks like let alone what it taste like!!! ( sorry off track)

Marie.

This is what I do...
I don't feed my children. It makes the whole process easier.

Im just kidding. I don't have kids.

Im a middle child and my brother is so much younger than me that I have gotten to be a part of parenting him and seeing what works and what doesn't. He's my guinea pig before I actually get kids so I don't mess up any I have to keep.

Im a bit sarcastic if you haven't noticed.

Well what works with him and what worked with me is having a diverse variety of friends. We know people from all over the globe. He eats at friends' houses often and so he gets used to eating new foods. The best way to get kids to eat something new is for them to see their friends eating it.

When that fails, I say that superman got his superpowers by eating whatever the particular food in question is.

Re name the food!
My grandaughter would not even try a cherry.... So I told her they were Mighigan Grapes... She loved them! I also make meals fun... My grandson loves it when we do french toast and 'TAKE IT UP A NOTCH" like emerial... We "BAM" the powdered sugar on top of strawberries! Also, if you have the time, having them help make it, makes them want to try it faster. We also grow some veggies in pots for the kids... Haley, who is 4 picks her own cucumbers, washes them and eats them with salt. The cherry tomatoes too!

Hiding the good stuff
I have this trick of hiding the veggies for my pickier 4 year old. I substitute half of the cheese in casseroles with pureed squash. We all get the boost and the puree makes the meal creamier without all that cheese. I have found that sometimes it's a texture thing with my kids. My picky one claims he can't stand carrots but if I give it to him raw with dip he eats it. Go figure.
