mrtnzangel8 1 year, 2 months ago said: Savings @ the grocery store... We went to grocery shop last nite after the girls' Fun Night @ school....
going through the produce aisle, the dad picked up a 1 lb. bag of baby carrots. I was over looking at the 2 lb. bag of whole carrots, the difference in price was over a dollar more for the baby carrots! I told him, you are not getting those baby carrots just to save me a step, and you do realize the baby carrots are just shaved down whole ones....so by all means...get the 2 lb. bag!
And then, I saw the dinky little head of lettuce he had put in the cart. Keep in mind the lettuce is not charged by the pound, he said, I just grabbed one. (eyeroll here) So I went back to the lettuce and there was one almost twice the size at the same price!
what was he thinking?!?
so, new rule, he can be in charge of the meat....I am in charge of the veggies....LOL
mystic_river1 1 year, 2 months ago said: RE: Savings @ the grocery store... the celery is the same way. celery hearts are a fortune but the whole celery is much cheaper and you can use the top leafy parts in soup
the mixed lettuce in the bags is so much more expensive..well they have to bag it so we pay..I just don't buy anymore. I used to once in a while buy the mixed baby greens as a treat for me. Treating is a thing of the past.
Then we have to be careful of the 2/5.00 sales. When 1 costs 2.25!
called the butcher in the Harps store and asked if he had any marrow bones and how much? he said yes and 1.79 a lb. (which is really way out of line). when I went the next day after work his asst was there and I told him I wanted 2 packs. I almost fainted when one , with 4 bones was 6.49. he had marked them at 2.89lb. I finally got them at the quoted price.
Also asked what time he reduces prices on meat that is to expire that day and he said 5 o'clock and that is good to know.
like that new rule ang..thanks for the story

I don't know if that is a good price or not......anyway, looked right above that and saw 2, 1 lb. chubs of ground Italian sausage marked down from 2.99 to .99!
Grabbed them both and am now thinking what I can do with them. I know I can put it in spag. and such. But what about mixing it with ground beef for meat loaf? Any other ideas? I have never cooked with this stuff either...... :)

I recently was able to get two packages of sweet and hot sausages (18 sausages in each package) for $1.99 each package, I was astounded and quickly threw them into my cart - once home, repackaged into smaller usable groupings....I am not too proud at all to pick up a package of meat that needs to be sold that day - I just make sure it looks and smells good, and off it goes right into the freezer if I wont be using it that day.
I always look at the weekly sales online, and keep my grocery list up to date and will shop at the store that provides me what I need on sale -
the one extra good thing is that I have been doing a lot more from scratch these days then every before - and though it might add some time, I do like the food even better.

Now I do not mind to slice them thin myself, create my own 'tenders', nor freezing them up separately. And furthermore, I see the sliced thin chicken breasts which costs about 4.00/pound... just saying.... and lastly - the left over bones make for great soup starters.
My point is, don't be shy about asking your local butcher if they can create such 'family' packages of chicken breasts for immediate savings. Most stores create family packs and though most of us have limited freezer space, it is well worth checking into.
