I planted some pepper and tomato seeds indoors about a week ago and they haven't sprouted yet. About how long does that usually take?

RE: seeds
Can take up to 2 weeks monica. Don't worry yet. Make sure they are in a nice sunny place.

RE: seeds
Thanks!

RE: seeds
Keep the soil moist, too. Sometimes the soil is bad, or the seeds are too old. But usually, at least a couple of them should hatch. Also, make sure you don't bury them too deep, it could be hard for them to pop up in that case.

RE: seeds
How are the seed going Monica?

RE: seeds
so far only two have sprouted. They came up yesterday. I hope I end up with more than that!

RE: seeds
I'm up to four! I planted hot peppers, sweet peppers, and tomatoes, and so far only the tomato seeds have sprouted.

RE: seeds
Yay! I love it when things grow that I plant. Did you check to on the seed packets to see how long they are suppose to take? Some take longer than others.

RE: seeds
I believe the seeds said from one to two weeks, but I'm not sure.

Now that some of the seeds have sprouted, should I keep the "green house" cover off the planter thing?

RE: seeds
It would probaly depend on how warm your temps are there. If your getting a lot of good warm sunshine coming in the window they would probaly be okay. It is suppose to be cloudy and rainy here most of the week.

RE: seeds
Mom got all excited this week and went out and bought all sorts of veggie seeds. She didn't look at the little planting map on the back of the package until she got home. Mom was pretty dissappointed that its a bit late here in Florida to be starting up seeds. I think whe was particularly hopeful about the radishes.

So she has tossed them in "the drawer" for next year. I translate anything that goes into that drawer as being sent directly into the void never to be seen again.

RE: seeds
My moms whole house is sort of like that drawer. :) That's too bad. Is it just too hot there for radishes now?

RE: seeds
It's been over two weeks since I planted my seeds. I just had another tomato plant come up today, but still no peppers.

RE: seeds
I still wouldn't give up on them. especially if were you have tomatoes still just sprouting. Are they in a warm place as well as sunny? Sometimes if you have a florescent light to put over them that can help too.

RE: seeds
I just noticed that one of the peppers is sprouting. I have it in a warm spot that's usually sunny, but we've had a few days of cloudy weather so maybe that was the problem.

RE: seeds
Yay! I am so glad to hear it. What kind of peppers did you plant?

RE: seeds
I planted some assorted hot peppers and some assorted sweet peppers, so whatever I end up with will be a surprise

RE: seeds
Sounds like an adventure! I love suprises. I planted some mis-marked peper plants last year and got some suprise peppers too. They were suppose to be sweet and dang they were hot. Just about scorched my lips off! Hope every one is have as lovely weather as we are. It is about 65 here today. Perfect! Happy weekend all!

RE: seeds
It's really nice here in Cleveland too. It's supposed to be rainy again in a few days though.

RE: seeds
omg... I just had some more tomato and pepper seedlings sprout up over the last couple days and it's been about month since I planted the seeds! I had no idea they could take that long!

RE: seeds
Probaly just needed for the soil to be a little warmer.

RE: seeds
Maybe that's it. I've had them indoors the whole time though, so I didn't think the temp would be a huge issue.

RE: seeds
Maybe more the sunshine they were getting than the temp. If you have been having weather like we have, it has been a cloudy spring. Lots of rain here. I know we need the moisture but I sure am ready for some sunshine.

RE: seeds
It's been on and off here. We'll have a few dreary days and then a few sunny days.

RE: seeds
Argh! It is cloudy here again today! I keep looking at the weeds growing in my flower beds and can't get out to do anything about them. Makes me crazy! If you are somewhere sunny please tell me about all you are getting done so I can live vicariously throught you! :0

RE: seeds
Momoto5, it is sunny here and I will let you could live vicariously through me but I don't think you want to. I started keeping my three month old grandson last week, the weeds are taking over the flower beds after the nice 8 inches of rain we received and I can't get outside. But I did plant some cucumber seeds either Saturday or Sunday and they are already coming up. Gotta go the baby is squawking. lol

RE: seeds
I'm so glad to hear that some of the seeds took almost a month! I have had my peter pepper seeds planted for 2 weeks now----and----nothing. Soooo....still waiting!

Great subject and posts. Thanks!

RE: seeds
Well I still think I would rather be kept inside by a tiny babe than the rain! That little baby stage is so short what fun to have the chance to have him around. I just can't wait to have fresh garden veggies again. Just talking about it makes my mouth water. Hey Knox, I still have to giggle every time I hear peter peppers. I have to admit I usually go the lazy route and buy my plants that need an early start. Once my little ones get older I will probaly plant some. For now though I just have this picture in my head of them all being yanked off on the floor. My baby is almost 2 now though so in a couple years.....

RE: seeds
I just had another pepper sprout yesterday! And it's been over a month now! It's insanity! lol

RE: seeds
Yay! Maybe they were just waiting for you to get done studying so you could give them you full attention. :) They are sensitive peppers! Well the sky is finally blue today and no 40 mile per hour winds. I may actually get something done outside. I am so excited!

RE: seeds
Maybe you're right, the new pepper plants were my reward for studying and keeping my brain from giving out on me! I want to start planting things outside today because some of my tomato plants are getting pretty big, but the weather isn't cooperating.

RE: seeds
Plan on fifty percent failure rate you may have 100 percent at first then after a few weeks some seedlings may fail thy are so tender when they are young and temperamental I mist my seedlings ant wait until they form the first set of true leaves before I harden them off.
Be patient.

RE: seeds
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I just had three more little elbows show above the dirt in the egg carton yesterday...I can tell this will be a loooong process!

MOMto5---Google a picture of "peter peppers" and you will see what they look like. *ahermmm!* I was told about them by ThePiggs here on site. She's a wonderful gardener and is in school now to learn even MORE! I got them as a novelty item, to pass to a pal or two, show in the yard, something for the guys to stand around and hee-haw over, hahaha!

They are *very* hot---so I'm not sure on how to use them, exactly. We are not big eaters of the spicy foods, but they will be neat to have for novelty!

But so yeah, 4 little sproutlings as of yesterday. Woohoo!

RE: seeds
I had three more peppers pop up yesterday! How am I going to know when to give up on the seeds that haven't sprouted?

It's crazy because my tray has some tomato plants that are getting huge and have tons of leaves and then it has some that are just popping up and all the seeds were planted at the same time!

RE: seeds
Well, I figure if you are ready to plant them outside and they still haven't sprouted, that is when I would give up on them. I will have to Google that Knox. Sorry been out and busy for a few days. Finally had some nice weather and so I was able to get some seeds planted and some flower beds cleaned out. I am so sore today!

RE: seeds
I now have tons of pepper plants! If they all make it I'm going to be rolling in peppers this year. The peppers are going to be a surprise though b/c I lost track of which ones were hot peppers and which ones were sweet peppers... oops.

I have a question about transplanting these things outside. If they are growing their true leaves but the leaves are all still really small is it too early to transplant them?

RE: seeds
They would probably be okay if you put water walls around them to protect them from the wind if needed and give them extra warmth at night, but it probaly wouldn't hurt to wait till the first of June to give them a little extra time either.

RE: seeds
When my pepper and other plants started to sprout and get leaves I transferred them to a bigger pot to let them grow more before going into the garden.

RE: seeds
That's a great idea mrtnzangel8. Gives them some room to grow. I was also going to say you can set them out side during the day as well and bring them in at night before transplanting them in the garden. That helps to toughen them up and get them used to the change.

RE: seeds
I transplanted everything outside about a week and a half ago and all my plants are doing great! I also planted more seeds outside. My only problem is that I planted a lot of pumpkin seeds b/c I wasn't sure how many would sprout and now I think every single one grew! I have pumpkin seedlings everywhere and I don't know what I'm going to do with them all! lol

RE: seeds
Sounds like your in the pumpkin business. Little extra money around October maybe! LOL to funny!

RE: seeds
I planted chocolate pepper seeds a few weeks ago. I had problems with the seed case not popping off the seedling and killing the seed leaves, but if I tried to pull them off like I do the tomato seed hulls often the whole top of the little pepper plant came off and just left the stalk. It was my first try at pepper seeds. I did get enough pepper plants for the season, but they sure are small compared to plants at Walmart.

RE: seeds
I had a few problems with seed casings too. I pulled one off a little tomato plant and it left just the stem. I thought the plant would die, but it didn't. Eventually it started slowly growing little tiny leaves out of the top of the stem. It's way behind in it's growth though and it's growing so slowly there's no way it'll mature enough to produce tomatoes this season. It's about 1 inch tall and all the other plants that sprouted at the same time are like a foot and a half tall! lol
