How to make it

  • Cream shortening until soft; add vanilla and gradually add the sugar, stirring until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Continue creaming and add egg yolks one at a time.
  • Add flour sifted with baking powder and salt and milk alternately, a little at a time. Add the flour first and last. Beat in the dry ingredients and stir in the milk.
  • Melt chocolate over warm water, not boiling water; blend into batter.
  • Fold in the beaten egg whites which are stiff enough to hold their peaks, but are still moist and shiny in appearance.
  • Pour batter into a lightly greased pan.
  • For a layer cake bake in a moderate oven (365) for 40-45 minutes.
  • For a loaf cake, bake in moderate oven (325) for 40-45 minutes.
