How to make it

  • Cake: Sift flour, once, measure, add baking powder, salt and sift 3 times. Cream shortening, and add 1 1/2 cups sugar gradually, and cream until light and fluffy. Add flour alternately with milk, beating each time until smooth. Add vanilla, and blend. Beat egg whites until foamy and add 1/2 cup sugar gradually, and beat only until mixture holds a soft peak. Beat thoroughly into batter. Add chopped nuts and mix well. Bake in 2 - 9" layer pans lined and greased at 375 for about 30 minutes. Cover with divinity icing and decorate with nut halves.
  • Icing: Combine sugar, water, cream of tartar. Cook without stirring to 238 degrees. pour 1/2 of syrup in fine stream over stiffly beaten egg whites, stirring constantly. Cook remainder of syrup to 248 degrees. Pour into icing, beat thoroughly, add flavoring and spread at once.
