How to make it

  • Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs.
  • Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring (I use 2 ounces of water instead). Add to creamed mixture.
  • Sift flour and salt, add alternately with buttermilk and vinegar.
  • Sift together and add to batter the vanilla and soda. Mix well.
  • Bake at 350 in 2 8" pans for 20 minutes, or until done.
  • Frosting: Cream together butter and powdered sugar. Cook milk and flour until thick. Cool flour mixture and add to creamed mixture gradually, beating constantly. Add vanilla. Add food coloring if you so desire, then frost cooled cake. Keep refrigerated.
