Red Velvet Cake

- 1/2 cup shortening shopping list
- 1 1/2 cup sugar shopping list
- 2 eggs shopping list
- 2 TBS cocoa shopping list
- 2 oz bottle red food coloring (or not!) shopping list
- 2 1/2 cups cake flour shopping list
- 1 tsp salt shopping list
- 1 cup buttermilk shopping list
- 1 tsp vinegar shopping list
- 1 tsp vanilla shopping list
- 1 tsp soda shopping list
- Frosting: shopping list
- 1 cup butter shopping list
- 1 cup powdered sugar shopping list
- 1 cup milk shopping list
- 3 TBS flour shopping list
- 1 TBS vanilla shopping list
How to make it
- Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs.
- Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring (I use 2 ounces of water instead). Add to creamed mixture.
- Sift flour and salt, add alternately with buttermilk and vinegar.
- Sift together and add to batter the vanilla and soda. Mix well.
- Bake at 350 in 2 8" pans for 20 minutes, or until done.
- Frosting: Cream together butter and powdered sugar. Cook milk and flour until thick. Cool flour mixture and add to creamed mixture gradually, beating constantly. Add vanilla. Add food coloring if you so desire, then frost cooled cake. Keep refrigerated.
