How to make it

  • In a good sized buttered baking dish put a layer of 1/3 of the potatoes, then 1/2 the meat, 1/3 of the potatoes, remaining meat, and top with potatoes. (3 layers of potatoes and 2 of meat.)
  • Combine the soup, milk, sour cream, salt and pepper well; this makes the sauce.
  • Pour the sauce over the potatoe and meat layers. Top the dish with generous slices of Cheddar cheese; top with the crushed corn flakes.
  • Place in a 350 oven for at least an hour. Be sure the potatoes are thoroughly cooked. Do not cover.

    If you remove the cream of mushroom soup and use this mixture instead; the recipe will become gluten free! Blend together 6 oz can of mushrooms, 12 oz cream cheese, 1/2-3/4 cups half and half, salt and pepper to taste until smooth. Most canned soups use flour in them; this is just as good -- actually, it's better!
