How to make it

  • Combine dry ingredients.
  • Melt chocolate slowly or in a double boiler.
  • Allow chocolate to cool and then blend w/ eggs and oil.
  • Combine flour mixture w/ chocolate mixture alternating w/ beets.
  • Pour into 2 greased 9” pans and bake at 325 for 40-50 minutes or until fork can be removed from center cleanly.

    Red Velvet Cake was originally made with red beets as a substitute for sugar during wartime when there was a shortage of sugar thereby getting its reddish color.
