Ingredients

* 1½ cups chopped dates

* 1 cup boiling water

* ½ cup shortening

* 1 cup sugar

* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

* 1 egg

* 1½ cups sifted all-purpose flour

* 1 teaspoon baking soda

* ¼ teaspoon salt

* ½ cup chopped California Walnuts

Directions

Combine dates with water; cool to room temperature. Cream shortening and sugar till fluffy. Add vanilla extract and egg; beat well. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together; add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating after each addition. Add nuts. Bake in greased 13 x 9½ x 2-inch pan in moderate oven at 350° F for 25 to 30 minutes.
