Ingredients
  • MEATBALLS
  • 400g Minced beef (ground beef)
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • 1 medium chilli pepper
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Cumin
  • 2 tablespoons Bread crumbs
  • 1 pinch Salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper (or to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons Oil (for frying)
  • .
  • SAUCE
  • 1 tablespoon Oil (for sauce)
  • 1 large Onion chopped
  • 1 medium red Paprika (red bell pepper)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 can (16 oz) chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 200C/ 392F
  2. Combine all meatball ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.
  3. Shape into 16-20 small meatballs.
  4. Heat the oil and fry the meatballs for 5-10 minutes. When browned, remove from heat and drain on kitchen paper.
  5. Place in an oven proof dish, and set aside.
  6. Roughly chop the paprika and onion.
  7. In a pan deep enough to hold a fair amount of liquid, heat the (sauce) oil over a medium heat.
  8. Slowly fry the chopped paprika and onion until soft.
  9. Add chilli, cumin, coriander and garlic, and fry for another 2-3 minutes.
  10. Add the remaining ingredients and allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  11. Pour sauce over the meatballs and cook in the middle of the oven at 200C/ 392F for 20 minutes.
  12. Serve with pasta.
  13. .
  14. If served with a nice salad and maybe a dessert to follow, it serves 4. If you like these meatballs (read: are really greedy like us), you may find the recipe only serves 2.
  15. I have never tried freezing them, but I often serve them at informal dinner parties; one of their biggest advantages is the possibility for advance preparation, and simply boiling some pasta and popping the dish of meatballs in the oven when the guests arrive.

Alterations

I often blitz the sauce in a blender before pouring over the meatballs. It becomes a lot easier to eat with certain pasta shapes, and kids who don't like vegetables are more willing to eat it when they can't see lumps of onion, tomato and paprika in it.
