Ingredients
  • 10 oz salted or smoked herring fillets, finely chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes, cooked and shredded
  • 2 medium carrots, cooked and shredded
  • 1 large (10-12 oz) beet, cooked and shredded
  • 1 medium Granny Smith apple, peeled and shredded
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg, hard-boiled and shredded
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • parsley and dill for garnish
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions
  1. To make sauce, combine mayonnaise with sour cream and mix well. Stir in salt and pepper (optional).
  2. Place potatoes in an even layer in the bottom of a large glass bowl. Spread one tablespoon of sauce over potatoes.
  3. Place the herring layer. Cover with chopped onion.
  4. Then place the layer of carrots and layer of apples, spread one tablespoon of sauce over each of them.
  5. Finish with the beet layer, generously covered with sauce.
  6. Top with shredded egg.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley and dill.
