Ingredients
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1 lb dried figs
  • 1/4 c milk
  • 2 1/2 tsps orange zest
  • 1 c orange marmalade
  • 1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c honey
  • 2 1/2 c sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 lb sliced walnuts
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 c raisins
  • 2 1/2 tsps baking powder
  • 1/2 c white sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions
  • Step #1 Grind the figs, raisins, orange zest & walnuts in a food processor/blender, mixer or food grinder.
  • Step #2 If the mixture is too thick, a couple of tbsps of water can be added.
  • Step #3 Gradually mix in the honey, cinnamon, chocolate chips & orange marmalade.
  • Step #4 Set aside.
  • Step #5 Preheat the oven to 400F degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Step #6 Grease two baking sheets.
  • Step #7 In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar & baking powder.
  • Step #8 Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Step #9 Stir in the eggs, milk & vanilla until the mixture can be gathered into a ball.
  • Step #10 Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, & roll out to 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Step #11 Cut the dough into strips that are 4 inches wide.
  • Step #12 Spread filling onto one half of each strip lengthwise.
  • Step #13 Fold the dough over to cover & seal the edges by pressing on them with the tines of a fork.
  • Step #14 Slice the filled strips crosswise at an angle about every inch or so.
  • Step #15 This will make diamond shapes.
  • Step #16 Place the cookies onto the prepared cookie sheet.
  • Step #17 Bake for 15 to 20 mins in the preheated oven, until golden brown.
  • Step #18 Remove from the baking sheet to cool on wire racks.
  • Step #19 Glaze with your favorite confectioners' glaze & top this with sprinkles for added festivity.
