Classic Redelvet Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tsps vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 c baking cocoa
  • 1/2 c butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp butter flavoring
  • 1 bottle (1 oz) red food coloring
  • FROSTING:
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 3 tsps white vinegar
  • 3 3/4 c confectioners' sugar
  • 2 1/2 c cake flour
  • 1 1/2 c sugar
  • 1/2 c shortening

Directions
  • Step #1 In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening & sugar.
  • Step #2 Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Step #3 Beat in food coloring, vinegar, butter flavoring & vanilla.
  • Step #4 Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda & salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  • Step #5 Pour into three greased & floured 9-in.
  • Step #6 round baking pans.
  • Step #7 Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 mins or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Step #8 Cool for 10 mins before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Step #9 In a large mixing bowl, mix frosting ingredients; beat until smooth & creamy.
  • Step #10 Spread between layers & over top & sides of cake.
