Yaya's Twinkie Baklava Recipe

Ingredients
  • 3/4 c water .
  • 1/2 lemon, juice of .
  • 2 tbsps sugar .
  • 1/3 tsp ground cinnamon .
  • 1 (15 oz) package Hostess Twinkies, cut into thirds lengthwise (10 count) .
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves .
  • 1/2 c honey .
  • Simple Syrup .
  • butter .
  • 1 1/2 c walnuts, coarsely sliced .
  • 1/3 tsp ground cardamom .
  • Nut Mixture .
  • 1 tsp rose water (or orange blossom water) (optional)

Directions
  • Step #1 Prepare the simple syrup by simmering the honey, water, & lemon juice until thick.
  • Step #2 Remove from heat & add rosewater if using, cool then put in the fridge.
  • Step #3 In 9 x 13 inch buttered baking dish arrange singly one half of the sliced Twinkies.
  • Step #4 Pour 1/3 of the cooled simple syrup over the Twinkies.
  • Step #5 In small bowl mix the sliced nuts, cinnamon, sugar, cardamom & cloves.
  • Step #6 Stir well.
  • Step #7 Next sprinke & distribute the nut mixture evenly over the Twinkie/syrup.
  • Step #8 Add the remaining Twinkies in even rows on top of nut mixture.
  • Step #9 Dot the Twinkies with butter.
  • Step #10 Bake at 350° for about 15-20 mins or until golden brown.
  • Step #11 Remove from oven & while still warm pour the remaining simple syrup mixture over the baked Twinkies.
  • Step #12 Let set about 10 mins.
  • Step #13 Cut into diagonals.
