Step #2 Cream Butter & Brown Sugar together with an electric hand mixer or if you would rather do it by hand, a heavy spattula will work.
Step #3 Add the baking powder & egg until the mixture looks smooth & creamy.
Step #4 Beat in the vanilla extract.
Step #5 Slowly beat the flour into the mixture, a quarter c at a time until you use all the flour.
Step #6 Add your Pecans or walnuts.
Step #7 (I have used both together, & appart, either way they taste wonderful! In fact I have even altered this recipe & used ground almonds).
Step #8 If you think the dough is too warm you may want to put it in the freezer.
Step #9 When I bake in the winter I often will put all my cookie doughs in the freezer for fifteen mins before working with them.
Step #10 If the dough is too warm, it will spread while baking & you will get pancakes rather then cookies :).
Step #11 Take the dough from the freezer & drop it by the tsp onto an ungreased cookie sheet approx 2 inches apart.
Step #12 Bake for 8-10 mins until the cookie looks golden, when you lift the cookies they should have an even color on the bottom.
Step #13 Cool the cookies on a wire rack until they are cool to touch.
Step #14 While the cookies cool gather your semisweet chips & vegetable shortening in a small sandwich baggie.
Step #15 If you want you can use a chocolate melting double boiler.
Step #16 Personally I like to do things the quick & easy way, so take your baggie of chocolate & shortening & seal it closed, then put it in a bowl of warm water.
Step #17 Wait approximately five mins & the chocolate should have melted.
Step #18 If not repeat with warmer water.
Step #19 Use your finger to make sure the chocolate & shortening have mixed.
Step #20 Using a scissors snip the corner of the sandwich baggie & drizzle the chocolate over the cooled cookies.
Step #21 For small drizzles make only a slight cut in the corner of the bag, for larger chocolate lines, make a larger cut.
Step #22 I usually make designs on the cookies with the chocolate.
Step #24 These cookies are one of my favorites, & I often bring them to parties or special occasions because of their beautiful appearance & interesting flavor.
Step #25 **To Toast Nuts**.
Step #26 Set oven to 350 Degrees F.
Step #27 Place nuts on baking sheet in a single layer.
Step #28 Bake for approximately 5-8 mins checking frequently, & stirring them about on the sheet.
Step #29 They should become a golden bronze color, depending on the nut.
Step #30 The toasting of nuts will allow for a richer flavor usually.
