Cowboy Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/2 c boiling water
  • 4 c all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 c cold milk
  • 1 tsp white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsps active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsps butter, melted & cooled

Directions
  • Step #1 In a large bowl, milk, stir this together the water, & sugar.
  • Step #2 Sprinkle top the yeast over the top, & let this stand for 5 mins to dissolve.
  • Step #3 Stir the egg & butter into the yeast mixture, nutmeg, then stir in the the salt, & 2 c of the flour.
  • Step #4 Mix until everything is well mixed.
  • Step #5 Mix in remaining flour, 1/2 c at a time until the dough pulls away from the side of the bowl.
  • Step #6 Turn out onto a floured surface, & knead for 10 mins (no cheating!).
  • Step #7 Place dough into a greased bowl, & let rise until doubled in size.
  • Step #8 Divide the dough into 8 balls, & let rest for another 20 mins.
  • Step #9 Roll each ball out to 8 to 10 inches in diameter.
  • Step #10 Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Step #11 Fry each of the pieces of bread fro 30 to 60 seconds on each side, or until light to medium brown spots appear.
  • Step #12 Keep covered with a damp cloth, or store this in a plastic bag until serving.
