Hungarian Walnut Torte Recipe

Ingredients
  • 5 tbsps water .
  • 1/2 c butter, softened .
  • 1 (3 1/2 oz) package cook-and-serve chocolate pudding mix .
  • 1 c confectioners' sugar .
  • Filling .
  • 1 tsp baking powder .
  • 6 eggs, seperated .
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract .
  • 1/2 c shortening .
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract .
  • 1/2 c ground walnuts .
  • 1 c cake flour .
  • 1 c sugar .
  • 1 1/4 c milk

Directions
  • Step #1 In large mixing bowl, beat egg yolks & sugar for 10 mins or until light lemon-colored.
  • Step #2 Beat in vanilla.
  • Step #3 Combine cake flour & baking powder; add to egg mixture alternately with water, beating well.
  • Step #4 Fold in walnuts.
  • Step #5 In another mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form; fold into batter.
  • Step #6 Pour into two greased & floured 9 inch round cake pans.
  • Step #7 Bake at 350 for 20-25 mins or until toothpicks come out clean.
  • Step #8 Cool for 10 mins; remove this from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Step #9 In small saucepan, whisk the milk & pudding mix.
  • Step #10 Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • Step #11 Remove from the heat.
  • Step #12 Pour into a bowl; press a piece of waxed paper or plastic wrap over pudding.
  • Step #13 Refrigerate for 30 mins.
  • Step #14 In mixing bowl, cream the butter, shortening & confectioners sugar until light & fluffy.
  • Step #15 Beat in vanilla & cooled pudding.
  • Step #16 Split each cake into two layers.
  • Step #17 Place one bottom layer on a serving plate; spread with about 3/4 c filling.
  • Step #18 Repeat layers.
  • Step #19 Garnish with chocolate curls, if desired.
