Ingredients
3 tbsps butter .
1 c buttermilk (or sour milk) .
1 1/4 c sugar .
1/4 lb walnuts, sliced (about 1 1/2 c) .
1 3/4 c flour .
1 tbsp water .
2 eggs .
1/3 c brown sugar .
1 c heavy cream, whipped .
1 oz unsweetened chocolate .
1 tsp salt .
1/2 c vegetable shortening .
3/4 tsp baking soda
Directions
Step #1 Melt butter in the bottom of a 9 inch square cake pan, & mix in the brown sugar & water.
Step #2 Sprinkle top the sliced walnuts over the mixture.
Step #3 Melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water.
Step #4 Remove from heat when melted, & let cool for just a few mins, stirring to prevent it from hardening.
Step #5 In a separate bowl, cream the shortening with sugar until fluffy.
Step #6 Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.
Step #7 Beat in the melted chocolate.
Step #8 Sift the flour, baking soda, & salt.
Step #9 Blend the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk.
Step #10 Spoon the batter over the walnuts in the cake pan.
Step #11 Bake at 350 F for about 50 mins, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Step #12 Let cool 5 mins.
Step #13 Turn cake out onto a serving plate.
Step #14 Serve warm with whipped cream.
