Step #1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step #2 In a large bowl, mix flour & salt.
Step #3 Mix in water, stirring constantly, until the dough pulls together.
Step #4 Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface & knead until smooth & firm, about 7 to 10 mins.
Step #5 Invert a medium sized mixing bowl & cover tightly with aluminum foil.
Step #6 Turn up the edge of the foil to make a shelf around the outer rim of the bowl.
Step #7 Roll a piece of dough out to 1/2 inch thickness & cut out a 3 inch circle.
Step #8 Place this circle on top of the inverted bowl to form the base of the basket.
Step #9 Roll dough out into long ropes.
Step #10 Braid the ropes together & coil them around the mixing bowl starting at the circle.
Step #11 Wet the dough slightly where you want it to stick together.
Step #12 To make a smooth transition from one braid to the next, snip the ends off square & press together with a bit of water.
Step #13 Stick each new row to the one before it.
Step #14 Continue until the bowl is completely wrapped in dough.
Step #15 When you reach the top of the bowl, finish it off by wrapping a single rope of dough around the rim.
Step #16 Brush the basket with egg white.
Step #17 Bake in preheated oven for 30 mins, or until basket is firm.
Step #18 Remove from oven, slip basket off of the bowl & bake this until hard & golden, this takes about 30 to 40 mins depending on the thickness of the basket.
