Margaret Houston's White Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/2 c milk .
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract .
  • 1 tsp almond extract .
  • 6 large egg whites, room temperature .
  • 3 c all-purpose flour .
  • 1 tbsp baking powder .
  • 3/4 c butter, softened .
  • 1/2 tsp salt .
  • 2 c sugar .
  • 1/2 c water

Directions
  • Step #1 Cream butter & sugar, beating until smooth.
  • Step #2 Combine flour, baking powder & salt.
  • Step #3 Combine milk & water.
  • Step #4 Add flour mixture to creamed mixture, alternately with milk mixture, beginning & ending with flour mixture.
  • Step #5 Mix well after each addition.
  • Step #6 Stir in flavoring.
  • Step #7 Beat egg whites (at room temp.
  • Step #8 ) until soft peaks form & then fold into the batter.
  • Step #9 Pour into 3 greased & floured 9 inch round cake pans.
  • Step #10 Bake at 350° for 25 mins or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Step #11 Cool in pans 10 mins before removing the layers to cool completely.
