Chocolate Shoofly Pie Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/2 c semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c packed brown sugar
  • 3 tbsps butter flavored shortening
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 c cold water
  • 1 (9 inch) pie shell
  • 3/4 c boiling water
  • 1 c unsulfured molasses
  • 1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Step #2 In a small bowl, mix together flour & brown sugar.
  • Step #3 Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Step #4 Set aside 1 c of this mixture for topping the pie.
  • Step #5 In a large bowl, mix egg, molasses, cold water, & remaining crumb mixture.
  • Step #6 Mix thoroughly.
  • Step #7 Dissolve baking soda in boiling water & add to molasses mixture.
  • Step #8 Mix well.
  • Step #9 Spread chocolate chips across bottom of pastry-lined pie pan.
  • Step #10 Pour filling over chocolate chips.
  • Step #11 Sprinkle top reserved crumb mixture over top.
  • Step #12 Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 55 mins, until filling is set.
