Ingredients
1/2 c semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 c packed brown sugar
3 tbsps butter flavored shortening
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 c cold water
1 (9 inch) pie shell
3/4 c boiling water
1 c unsulfured molasses
1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 egg, beaten
Directions
Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step #2 In a small bowl, mix together flour & brown sugar.
Step #3 Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step #4 Set aside 1 c of this mixture for topping the pie.
Step #5 In a large bowl, mix egg, molasses, cold water, & remaining crumb mixture.
Step #6 Mix thoroughly.
Step #7 Dissolve baking soda in boiling water & add to molasses mixture.
Step #8 Mix well.
Step #9 Spread chocolate chips across bottom of pastry-lined pie pan.
Step #10 Pour filling over chocolate chips.
Step #11 Sprinkle top reserved crumb mixture over top.
Step #12 Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 55 mins, until filling is set.
