Italian Sausage Strata Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 c sliced onions .
  • 1/2 c butter or margarine, softened, divided .
  • 1 lb bulk Italian sausages, cooked & drained .
  • 1 tsp ground mustard .
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg .
  • 5 eggs .
  • 12-16 slices day-old bread, crusts removed .
  • 1/2 lb fresh mushrooms, sliced .
  • 2 1/2 c milk .
  • salt & pepper .
  • 2 tbsps minced fresh parsley .
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard .
  • 3 c shredded cheddar cheese

Directions
  • Step #1 Using 1/4 c butter, spread one side of each bread slice with butter.
  • Step #2 Place half of the bread, butter side down, in a greased 13 x 9 inch x 2 inch baking dish.
  • Step #3 In a large skillet, sauté the mushrooms & onions in remaining butter.
  • Step #4 Sprinkle top with salt & pepper.
  • Step #5 Spoon half of the mushroom mixture over bread in prepared pan.
  • Step #6 Top with half of the sausage & cheese.
  • Step #7 Layer with the remaining bread, mushroom mixture, sausage & cheese.
  • Step #8 In a bowl, mix the eggs, Dijon mustard, milk, nutmeg & ground mustard.
  • Step #9 Pour over cheese.
  • Step #10 Cover up & put in the fridge overnight.
  • Step #11 Remove from the refrigerator 30 mins before baking.
  • Step #12 Bake, covered, at 350°F for 50 mins.
  • Step #13 Uncover; bake 10 to 15 mins longer or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Step #14 Sprinkle top with parsley.
  • Step #15 Yield: 12 servings.
