Pastitsio Greek Casserole
Ingredients
1/4 tsp pepper .
2 large eggs .
2/3 c all-purpose flour .
2 garlic cloves, minced .
2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce .
8 oz ziti pasta, cooked & drained .
1 1/2 lbs ground round .
3 tbsps butter or margarine .
1 1/2 tsps salt, divided .
1 medium onion, sliced .
4 c milk .
1/2 c butter or margarine .
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon .
2 (3 oz) packages shredded parmesan cheese, divided
Directions
Step #1 Toss pasta with 3 tbsps butter & 1/2 c parmesan cheese; set aside.
Step #2 In a large skillet over medium-high heat, onion, cook the ground round, & garlic; stirring to crumble meat; cook this until meat is no longer pink; drain.
Step #3 Stir in tomato sauce, cinnamon, 1 1/4 tsps salt, & pepper.
Step #4 In a heavy saucepan, melt 1/2 c butter over low heat/flame.
Step #5 Whisk in flour.
Step #6 Cook & whisk constantly for 1 min.
Step #7 Whisk in milk; cook & whisk constantly over med-heat/flame until thickened & bubbly.
Step #8 Stir in remaining 1/4 tsp salt; remove this from heat.
Step #9 In a separate bowl, whisk eggs until thick & pale.
Step #10 Whisk about 1/4 milk mixture into eggs; add to remaining milk mixture, whisking constantly.
Step #11 To assemble: spoon pasta mixture into a greased 13x9 inch baking dish.
Step #12 Spoon beef mixture over pasta.
Step #13 Sprinkle top with remaining parmesan cheese.
Step #14 Top with cream sauce.
Step #15 Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hr or until golden.
