Mom's Best Soft Gingerbread Cookies (new! Gb House Directions!) Recipe

Ingredients
  • 4 c flour .
  • 1 large egg .
  • raisins .
  • 1 1/4 c sugar .
  • 1 tsp salt .
  • 1 tsp ginger .
  • 1 tsp whole cloves .
  • 1 c flour .
  • 1 1/2 tsps baking soda .
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon .
  • 1/3 c hot water .
  • 1 c molasses .
  • 1 c butter flavor shortening

Directions
  • Step #1 Place cloves in hot water; set aside.
  • Step #2 Cream shortening & sugar.
  • Step #3 Add egg & beat.
  • Step #4 Add molasses, beat.
  • Step #5 Remove cloves from water, discard cloves.
  • Step #6 Add clove water, beat.
  • Step #7 *Dough will look "curdled".
  • Step #8 Add rest of ingredients, except the last 4 c flour, & beat.
  • Step #9 Gradually beat in last 4 c flour.
  • Step #10 Chill dough.
  • Step #11 Roll out to 1/2" thick or slightly less.
  • Step #12 Cut into shapes.
  • Step #13 Decorate with raisins if desired.
  • Step #14 Place carefully on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Step #15 Bake at 375° for 8-10 mins.
  • Step #16 Do not over bake.
  • Step #17 *GB House directions:.
  • Step #18 Make dough the same as above, but roll dough out thin, 1/4" at most.
  • Step #19 Bake in 325F oven for about 20 mins.
  • Step #20 Remove to racks to cool, & let harden/dry out a bit overnight for sturdiness if making large pieces.
  • Step #21 *Doors & windows need to be cut out PRIOR to baking.
  • Step #22 Fill any with crushed hard candy before baking, too.
  • Step #23 And pieces filled with hard candy baked the best on foil wrap.
  • Step #24 Non candy-filled pieces were baked on parchment paper.
