Step #1
In a small mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar & yeast in warm water.
Step #2 Let stand until creamy, about 10 mins.
Step #3 In a large mixing bowl, whole wheat flour, vegetable oil, mix the yeast mixture with the milk, 1 c of the all-purpose flour & the salt; beat well.
Step #4 Add the remaining flour, 1/2 c at a time, stirring well after each addition.
Step #5 When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface & knead until smooth & elastic, about 10 mins.
Step #6 Oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl & turn to coat with oil.
Step #7 Cover with a damp cloth & let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hr.
Step #8 Grease two 8x4 inch bread pans.
Step #9 Deflate the dough & turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
Step #10 Divide the dough into two equal pieces & form into loaves.
Step #11 Place the loaves into the pans.
Step #12 Cover with a damp cloth & let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 mins.
Step #13 Meanwhile, preheat your trusty oven to 400F degrees F (200 degrees C).
Step #14 Brush the risen loafs with lightly beaten egg.
Step #15 Bake at 400F degrees F (200 degrees C) for 30 mins, or until the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
