Spicy Holiday Meatballs Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 c ketchup
  • 1 c water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 to 3 tbsps prepared mustard
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 (10 3/4-oz) can tomato puree
  • 2 tbsps olive oil
  • 1 small jalapeño pepper, seeded & finely sliced
  • 1/2 tsp hot sauce
  • 2 small onions, finely sliced & divided
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 c cracker meal
  • 1 tsp pepper
  •  Garnish: fresh sliced sage
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 c red wine vinegar

Directions
  • Step #1 Sauté 1 sliced onion in hot oil In a large-ish skillet over medium-high heat 5 mins or until tender.
  • Step #2 Add tomato puree & next 8 ingredients.
  • Step #3 Bring to a boil; reduce heat, stirring every once in awhile, & let simmer, 1 hr.
  • Step #4 Combine ground beef, jalapeño pepper, remaining 1 onion, & next 5 ingredients.
  • Step #5 Shape into 40 (1/2-inch) balls.
  • Step #6 Place on a lightly greased rack in a roasting pan.
  • Step #7 Bake at 350° for 25 mins or until no longer pink; add to sauce in skillet, stirring carefully to coat.
  • Step #8 Stir in hot sauce just before serving.
  • Step #9 Garnish, if desired.
  • Step #10 Note: Cooked or uncooked meatballs may be frozen up to 1 month.
  • Step #11 Reheat frozen cooked meatballs in a 350° oven 10 to 12 mins or until thoroughly heated.
  • Step #12 Bake uncooked frozen meatballs in a 350° oven 25 mins.
  • Step #13 Freeze sauce separately; thaw in refrigerator, & cook this until thoroughly heated.
