Hot Cross Buns Recipe

Ingredients
  • 5 c all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 (1/4-oz) envelopes active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 1 c warm milk (100° to 110°)
  • 1/2 c warm water (100° to 110°)
  • 1 1/2 tsps vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 c raisins
  • 1/2 c butter, softened
  •  Sugar Glaze
  • 1 1/2 tsps ground cinnamon

Directions
  • Step #1 Combine yeast & 1/2 c warm water In a large-ish mixing bowl; let this stand 5 mins.
  • Step #2 Add warm milk & next 5 ingredients.
  • Step #3 Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until mixed.
  • Step #4 Combine flour & cinnamon, & slowly add to yeast mixture, beating at medium speed for 2 mins.
  • Step #5 Stir in raisins.
  • Step #6 Place dough in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease top.
  • Step #7 Cover up & let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 2 hrs or until doubled in bulk.
  • Step #8 Punch dough down; cover & let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 30 mins.
  • Step #9 Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface, & roll to 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Step #10 Cut with a 2-inch round cutter.
  • Step #11 Place on a lightly greased 15- x 10-inch jellyroll pan.
  • Step #12 Cover up & let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 45 mins or until doubled in bulk.
  • Step #13 Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 20 to 25 mins or until lightly browned.
  • Step #14 Let rolls cool 10 mins.
  • Step #15 Pipe Sugar Glaze over rolls in an "X" shape.
