Step #1 Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy.
Step #2 Add 1/2 c sugar, beating well.
Step #3 Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until mixed after each addition.
Step #4 Combine flour & next 4 ingredients.
Step #5 Combine milk & 3 tbsps rum.
Step #6 Add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with milk mixture, beginning & ending with flour mixture; beat at lowish speed until mixed after each addition.
Step #7 Spoon into greased muffin pans, filling three-fourths full.
Step #8 Bake at 375° for 20 to 25 mins or until golden.
Step #9 Remove from pans as soon as possible; place on a wire rack.
Step #10 Combine remaining 2 tbsps rum & 3 tbsps sugar in a small saucepan; cook over low heat/flame, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves.
