Breakfast Casserole Ala Villani Style Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/2 c butter, melted (1/4 lb) .
  • 1/4 c finely sliced sweet red peppers .
  • 1/2 tsp salt .
  • 1/4 c minced onions .
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard .
  • 16 slices sharp cheddar cheese .
  • 16 slices bread, of your choice crust removed .
  • 3 c whole milk, homogenized .
  • 1/4 c finely sliced green peppers .
  • 1/8 tsp Tabasco sauce .
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper .
  • 2 tsps Worcestershire sauce .
  • 6 large eggs, beaten .
  • 16 thinly sliced Italian sausage .
  • 4 tbsps butter .
  • 3/4 c crushed corn flakes or Special K cereal

Directions
  • Step #1 Prepare this casserole dish the night before.
  • Step #2 In a 9 inch x 13 inch oven-proof casserole dish, place 8 slices of bread to cover bottom of dish.
  • Step #3 Place 8 slices of Italian sausage or more if required to cover the bread.
  • Step #4 Now place 8 slices of cheese (about 1/8 inch thickness) over the sausage.
  • Step #5 Cover up with another layer of 8 slices of bread.
  • Step #6 Then layer over with more Italian sausage to cover the bread.
  • Step #7 Layer the top this with slices of cheese.
  • Step #8 In a mixing bowl, onion, mustard, pepper, beat eggs, green & red peppers, add salt, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce & milk; mix well to mix.
  • Step #9 Pour mixture over the prepared casserole.
  • Step #10 Cover up with plastic wrap & put in the fridge overnight.
  • Step #11 Next morning, preheat your trusty oven to 350°F.
  • Step #12 Remove casserole from refrigerator, remove the plastic wrap & discard.
  • Step #13 Melt butter & spoon over the top of the casserole.
  • Step #14 Cover up the top this with crushed cereal crumbs.
  • Step #15 Bake uncovered in preheated 350 F oven for 60 mins.
  • Step #16 Remove from oven & let rest for 10 mins before cutting & serving.
  • Step #17 You may also use back bacon or sliced ham instead of Italian sausage.
