Ingredients
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg .
  • 1/2 c finely sliced almonds or coaresely ground almonds .
  • 1 tsp cinnamon .
  • 1 c sugar .
  • 2 tbsps sugar .
  • 1/2 lemon .
  • 1/8 tsp cloves .
  • 2 tbsps honey .
  • 30 sheets phyllo dough .
  • 1 c butter .
  • 1 c finely sliced walnuts or coarsely ground walnuts .
  • 1 c orange blossom water or rose water or water

Directions
  • Step #1 Lay 10 sheets of phyllo (cut to fit the pan) in a buttered 8 X 8-inch pan, brushing each sheet with butter.
  • Step #2 Mix the nuts with the 2 Tbs sugar & the spices & sprinkle half of the mixture over the phyllo; drizzle with melted butter.
  • Step #3 Repeat with 10 more phyllo sheets & the rest of the nut mixture.
  • Step #4 End with another layer of 10 phyllo sheets brushed with butter.
  • Step #5 Cut, without cutting through the bottom layer, into diamond-shaped pieces.
  • Step #6 Bake at 350F 1 hr.
  • Step #7 While it bakes, make a syrup: Boil water, 1 c sugar & ½ lemon for 15 mins.
  • Step #8 Remove the lemon & turn off the heat.
  • Step #9 Stir in 2 Tbs honey.
  • Step #10 Finish cutting through to the bottom of the baklava.
  • Step #11 Let the baklava cool, then pour warm lemon-honey syrup over it.
  • Step #12 Best to let it sit for a few hrs before eating.
