Chicken Stew With Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 large potatoes, peeled .
  • 1 large egg .
  • Dumplings .
  • 1 tsp bouquet garni herb seasoning mix .
  • salt & pepper .
  • 2 quarts water .
  • 1/2 c butter .
  • 1 c frozen green peas .
  • 2 tbsps sliced fresh parsley .
  • 2 medium onions, peeled .
  • 2 medium turnips, peeled .
  • Stew .
  • 3 lbs meaty chicken pieces .
  • 4 celery ribs, tops removed .
  • 2 c Bisquick baking mix .
  • 1/2 c milk .
  • 1/2 c flour .
  • 3 large carrots, peeled .
  • 2 tsps salt

Directions
  • Step #1 Place chicken pieces, water, & 2 tsps salt In a large-ish pot.
  • Step #2 Bring to a boil; cover & reduce heat to medium-low.
  • Step #3 Simmer until chicken is done.
  • Step #4 Remove chicken from broth; bone & cut into bite-size pieces.
  • Step #5 Set aside.
  • Step #6 Cut turnips, potatoes, onions, celery, & carrots into bite-size pieces.
  • Step #7 Bring broth back up to a gentle boil & add vegetables.
  • Step #8 Cook until vegetables are just done Strain into a colander set over a large bowl.
  • Step #9 Drain vegetables & set aside.
  • Step #10 Let broth sit until the fat rises to the top.
  • Step #11 Skim excess fat from top.
  • Step #12 Put pot back on stove over med-heat/flame.
  • Step #13 Add butter & cook this until it is melted & starts to foam.
  • Step #14 Add flour & cook, stirring constantly, until flour turns golden brown.
  • Step #15 Add about 2 c of the reserved broth & whisk until smooth.
  • Step #16 Whisk in the remaining broth.
  • Step #17 Bring to a gentle boil & cook, stirring every once in awhile, until sauce thickens.
  • Step #18 Add chicken, cooked vegetables, & green peas; cook this until bubbling.
  • Step #19 Make dumplings by mixing Bisquik, milk, egg, & parsley.
  • Step #20 Drop by spoonfuls onto top of carefully bubbling stew.
  • Step #21 Cook uncovered for 10 mins, then cover & cook for 10 more mins.
  • Step #22 Serve as soon as possible.
