English Roast Beef Recipe

Ingredients
  • 5 lbs beef round roast .
  • 1 tbsp flour .
  • OPTIONS .
  • 1/2 tsp dried sage .
  • For the Gravy .
  • 1 tbsp butter .
  • 2 tbsps butter .
  • 1/2 tsp dried mint .
  • 1/4 tsp dried sage .
  • 1/4 tsp dried mint .
  • 1/2 c water .
  • 1 whole onion, sliced .
  • 1/2 c water, cold .
  • 1/8 tsp crushed red pepper flakes, hot .
  • 1 garlic clove, minced .
  • 1/8 tsp seasoning salt

Directions
  • Step #1 Salt & pepper roast well.
  • Step #2 Place the butter in your pan & melt it over med-heat/flame.
  • Step #3 Brown the roast on all sides in this butter.
  • Step #4 After browning add 1/2 c water to the pan.
  • Step #5 Put sage & mint on the roast.
  • Step #6 Cover up pan.
  • Step #7 Roast at medium heat ( 325F -350 ) for 3 hrs if you like well done or 2 hrs for rare.
  • Step #8 Every hr or so look to make sure there is at least 1/2 c liquid in the pan.
  • Step #9 When done to your liking remove roast to a plate & keep warm.
  • Step #10 GRAVY:.
  • Step #11 Melt butter in a clean frypan over med-heat/flame.
  • Step #12 Add flour to melted butter.
  • Step #13 Stir until well mixed with the butter.
  • Step #14 Remove from heat & add 1/2 c cold water, The water must be cold, not hot, or hte flour & butter will become lumpy.
  • Step #15 Mix until a smooth paste is formed.
  • Step #16 Place the pan back on medium heat.
  • Step #17 Add sage & mint.
  • Step #18 Now add all the liquid from the roasting pan & mix it well.
  • Step #19 Stir all the time & let it boil slowly until thickend.
  • Step #20 Remove from heat & serve over roast.
  • Step #21 OPTIONS:.
  • Step #22 The onion , garlic, seasoned salt & crushed red pepper are added to the roast before cooking.
  • Step #23 Red wine can be used instead of water while roasting (use water only in the gravy).
