Dora's Christmas Cookies Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 c white sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 c shortening
  • 1 c milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 6 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
  • Step #2 Mix together sugar, shortening or margarine, vanilla extract & almond extract Cream these together until light.
  • Step #3 Add eggs & beat well.
  • Step #4 Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder & salt ( use 1/2 teas.
  • Step #5 if using margarine).
  • Step #6 Add to sugar mixture alternately with milk, ending with flour mixture.
  • Step #7 Dough will be quite stiff & may require mixing the last bit of flour in by hand.
  • Step #8 Roll out portions of dough on floured board & cut with your favorite cookie cutters.
  • Step #9 Place on greased cookie sheets & bake for 10 to 12 mins.
  • Step #10 Test for doneness by touching lightly with your finger.
  • Step #11 If there is no dent, they're done.
  • Step #12 Cool & frost, decorate with colored sugars & colored frosting.
  • Step #13 .
  • Step #14 Note: If you like crisp cookies, roll the dough thinner.
  • Step #15 For more cake-like dough roll thicker & use metal cookie cutters.
  • Step #16 Originally we used Anise oil to flavor the dough (5 to 6 drops) in place of the vanilla & almond extracts.
  • Step #17 But my children prefer the extracts.
