Whole Wheat Apple Turnovers Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 tbsp honey .
  • 3/4 c vegetable shortening .
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon .
  • 1 1/2 tsps sugar .
  • 3 granny smith apples, pared & finely sliced .
  • 1 pinch kosher salt .
  • 1/4 c water .
  • 1 1/2 tsps vinegar .
  • 1/4 tsp fresh lemon juice .
  • Filling .
  • 2 c whole wheat flour .
  • Crust .
  • 3 tbsps sugar .
  • 1/8 c egg whites .
  • 6 tsps light margarine .
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Directions
  • Step #1 Sift together flour & salt.
  • Step #2 Cut in shortening, add water.
  • Step #3 Roll 1/8” thick & cut into twelve 4” squares.
  • Step #4 Set aside.
  • Step #5 Mix apples, cinnamon, sugar, lemon juice, & salt.
  • Step #6 Drizzle with honey.
  • Step #7 Place 1 heaping tbsp apple mixture in center of each square.
  • Step #8 Dot with 1/2 tsp margarine.
  • Step #9 Moisten edges with water, fold into triangle, & press edges together with fork.
  • Step #10 Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • Step #11 Prick top this with fork.
  • Step #12 Bake 25 to 30 mins at 400°F.
