1 1/2 lbs beef sirloin, trimmed, sliced, & cut into bite-size pieces (may use beef tenderloin tips) .
1 tsp Chinese five spice powder .
2 tbsps tamari .
1/2 c smoked whole almonds .
2 tbsps cornstarch .
black pepper, to taste .
1/2 c dry sherry .
2 medium green bell peppers, sliced into 1-inch pieces .
1 1/2 c jasmine rice, prepared according to package directions
Directions
Step #1 Boil water for rice & prepare to package directions.
Step #2 Add beef broth to a small pan over low heat/flame to warm the broth.
Step #3 Heat a wok-shaped skillet over high heat; add oil (it will smoke) & beef pieces; stir-fry for 3 mins, then remove meat from pan.
Step #4 Return pan to heat & add peppers & onions; stir-fry 2 mins, & then stir the meat back into the pan.
Step #5 Add in sherry & stir-fry until liquid almost evaporates, about 1 min.
Step #6 Add in tamari; dissolve cornstarch with a ladle of warm beef broth; add beef broth to the pan, then the cornstarch mixd with broth, the five-spice powder, & black pepper.
Step #7 Stir until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Step #8 Adjust seasonings to taste; add more tamari or salt if necessary.
Step #9 Remove from heat; fill dinner bowls with beef stir-fry; with an ice cream scoop, place a nicely rounded scoop of rice on top of beef.
Step #10 Garnish with sliced scallions & smoked almonds.
