Danish Pastry Apple Bars Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 c light brown sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp salt
  •  
  • 1 c shortening
  • 1/4 c white sugar
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 10 apples - peeled, cored & thinly sliced
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 c all-purpose flour

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C.
  • Step #2 ) In a large bowl, mix flour & salt.
  • Step #3 Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Step #4 Beat egg yolk in measuring c & add enough milk to make 2/3 c total liquid.
  • Step #5 Stir into flour mixture until all flour is damp.
  • Step #6 Divide the dough in half.
  • Step #7 On floured surface, roll half the dough into a rectangle & fit into a 9x13 inch pan.
  • Step #8 In large bowl, mix apples, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg.
  • Step #9 Put apple mixture in pan.
  • Step #10 Roll out remaining dough & place over apples.
  • Step #11 Seal edges & cut slits in top dough.
  • Step #12 Beat egg white till frothy & brush on crust.
  • Step #13 Bake in the preheated oven for 50 mins, or until golden brown.
