Cornbread Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 c stone ground cornmeal
  • 1 tbsp shortening
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1 egg

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Step #2 Melt the shortening in one 9 inch round iron skillet in the heating oven.
  • Step #3 Stir the cornmeal, salt & baking soda together.
  • Step #4 Add the egg & buttermilk & mix well.
  • Step #5 Remove skillet from the oven & pour the batter into the skillet, stirring the melted shortening into the batter.
  • Step #6 Bake at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) for 30 to 40 mins.
  • Step #7 Remove from oven when top of cornbread is brown & turn out on to a serving plate.
  • Step #8 Cut into wedges & serve as soon as possible with butter.
